Ouyang Jian is a well-known Buddhist scholar in contemporary China, renowned for his intensive study of pure knowledge.China in the modern era is confronted with internal and external challenges, and traditional academics have also shifted.Universalism has been resurrected in modern times, and Ouyang Jian has played a significant role in its revival. At the same time,Ouyang Jian’s thought is heavily influenced by Confucianism, and his personality resembles that of a Confucian gentleman. Why is it that Ouyang Jian’s thought is influenced by Confucianism and Buddhism? What changes have occurred in his understanding of Confucianism over the course of his life? What is the fundamental content of his view of Confucianism and his views on Confucianism’s history? These are the critical contents for comprehending Ouyang Jian,as well as the direction for comprehending the traditional Chinese scholars of the late Qing and early Republic of China.Ouyang Jian was immersed in Confucianism as a child, initially pursuing a career as a representative of traditional intellectuals. However,in his middle years, under the influence of his friends,he turned to Buddhist studies as a result of his personal life experiences and the pain associated with the death of his loved ones.In his later years, against the backdrop of his family and country’s peril,Ouyang Jian inspired other Confucian scholars to actively be born and rush to save the country. He then shifted his focus to the study and promotion of Confucianism, and his academic focus eventually became the synthesis of Buddhism and Confucianism.Ouyang Jian’s Confucianism is consistent with the true spirit of Confucianism, which is reflected primarily in his assessment of the true spirit of Confucius, the sorting out of connotation and comprehension of the doctrine of the mean’s value. In his later years, his interpretation of the "Four Books" centered on the spirit of Confucianism’s accession to be born.He argued that "Buddhism is the body,Confucianism is the application," and the application of Confucianism’s be born is regarded as one of Buddhism’s connotations. His Doctrine of the Mean elucidates the distinction between the doctrine of the mean of rural wishes and the doctrine of the mean of madness, that is,to explain the academic reasons for those who were unconcerned about national politics and lacked social responsibility at the time,in order to advance the spirit of China’s be born accession, awaken the people’s consciousness, and call for salvation and survival.Ouyang Jian also judged significant figures in Confucianism’s history. He has a strong opinion about Confucianism following Confucius, particularly Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming dynasties. He is particularly disposed toward psychology and concurs with Lu Jiuyuan’s knowledge of simplicity and respect, while sharply criticizing Zhu Xi’s interpretation of "the mean" and refutation of Buddhism. He criticized Xiong Shili’s ontological analysis of modern neo-Confucianism,claiming that Xiong overlooked the noumenon of nirvana as the cut-off point of the great source. This paper primarily examines and researches Ouyang Jian’s life experiences and Confucian writings throughout his life, with a particular emphasis on several issues concerning Ouyang Jian’s Confucianism. It begins with the ideological changes in his early, middle, and late stages, and concludes with his later years, and delves deeply into the spiritual value of Ouyang Jian’s Confucianism.Ouyang Jian’s Confucianism is primarily Buddhist in nature. His study of Confucianism is quite exhaustive. On the basis of harmonization of Buddhism and Confucianism,he not only seeks the true meaning of Confucianism, but also critiques previous dynasties’ Confucian thought, demonstrating independent thought and a unique perspective on Confucianism research. His early study of Confucianism laid the groundwork for his integration of Confucianism and Buddhism,as well as for his later return to Confucianism. The true spirit of Confucius’ s be born is the impetus for his later years’ thought of breaking through Buddhism to Confucianism.Naturally,in comparison to the Buddhism he understands, the study of be born membership is integrated into the multi-level realm of Buddhism, and thus it is his fundamental position to return to Buddhism.
