Since the birth of printmaking,it has been carrying the function and expectation of reproduction and dissemination.From the title page illustration of The Diamond Sutra in the Tang Dynasty of China,to the rise of copper plate,stone plate,screen printing,and now the micro-jet output technology,every technological innovation means the rapid growth of communication function and demand."Image",as a more convenient and efficient form of mass communication,promotes the continuous development of printing technology until the appearance of photography,which even sends images to everyone’s eyes.Therefore,printmaking and photography are closely linked in the historical clues of their respective development.They learn from each other,blend with each other,and explore new paths respectively.Photography,born in the era of printmaking reproduction,dissemination and artistry,once followed the footsteps of printmaking and imitated painting to form painting photography.Printmaking also uses photographs in artistic creation.Due to the development of photography and its printing technology,the speed of image reproduction has been greatly enhanced in the era of mechanical replacement of manual work,which seems to have caused an impact on traditional printmaking workshops.Advertising,movie posters,newspapers and other businesses previously operated by printmaking workshops were gradually replaced by the photography industry,making people’s way of viewing images and their experience with images dramatically changed.However,just as photography did not end painting,but liberated painting,while the dissemination function of traditional printmaking gradually faded,its artistic performance ushered in a broader world,and more and more artists began to explore the art of printmaking.The rise of screen printing,resin printing,PS printing and Riso printing in recent years has enabled people of different identities to participate in printmaking,not only printmakers,designers,photographers and the public.In this era of unprecedented information of pictures,they are jointly expanding and defining the boundaries of photography and printmaking.Therefore,it is of great significance to analyze the printmaking after the era of photography,how photography intervened in printmaking and what influence it had on printmaking,so as to reflect on printmaking and promote the development of printmaking.
