The source text for this translation practice was excerpted from Chapter Four“Pakistan as US Partner in the War on Terror(WOT)-Post 9/11 Phase” and Chapter Five “Military Response Towards Terrorism: Home Front?” of the book Pakistan Response towards Terrorism: A Case Study of Musharraf Regime, with a total of26,000 words.Written by Shabana Fayyaz, the book was published by Vanguard Books in Lahore in 2020.Chapter Four analyzes the causes, nature and implications of Pakistan’s joining the U.S.-led War on Terror in the post 9/11 phase, and Chapter Five details a series of military operations launched by the Musharraf government in Pakistan’s tribal areas in reaction to terrorist attacks across Pakistan and assesses their effectiveness. As an academic text, the source text has such features as rigorousness and professionalism. Many of its words are highly context-dependent for their meanings and nominalization of verbs is common. There also exist many long sentences with complex structures. They are used to present complex views, ideas and facts with precision and describe things in detail, reflecting the rigorousness of the academic texts. In addition, the source text is cohesive and coherent. Its cohesion is mainly achieved by three cohesive devices: reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion, while its coherence is realized by implicit connections among sentences and paragraphs.Based on the text analysis, the translator chose Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as the guiding theory of this translation practice to accurately convey the information of the source text while reflecting its style, with the aid of such translation techniques as free translation, conversion, inversion and division. In this translation report, the translator analyzed and discussed the application of Functional Equivalence Theory in this translation practice at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels through cases analysis. The translation practice validates the feasibility of using Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation of English expository texts. It is hoped that the translation methods and techniques summarized in this report will provide some references for translating similar texts in the future.
