After the feminist criticism theory intervened in design history in the 1970 s,the deconstruction and revision of discourse about traditional design history provided a new perspective for re-understanding the position of women in design history and the relationship between women and design history.Body experience, identity politics, and gendered perspectives have become important dimensions for understanding design history and design criticism. In fact, however, the design history in itself has no gender. It is gendered by those who wrote it.From Pevsner to Buckley,Barham to Attfield, every design historian has, based on their own understanding, forged and modified the“Shape” of design history. This has formed a resonance with “Time” – the concept of gender and design criticism are in flux, also the concept of gender is not just the correspondence of the writer’s own gender, the writer’s narrative and gender awareness are closely related to the overall development of the times, economic systems, technological changes, and social culture. This paper attempts to,by tracing the transmutation of different design history texts on writing women-design relations, demonstrate the changing “Shape” of the mindset behind such narrative, thus providing an underground conduit for grasping the developing cognition. In its four chapters: "The Changing Context of Design History","Gendered Design Criticism","Design Historians VS Women and Design in Their Texts",and "The Female Gaze: The Feminist Design Landscape",it tries to restore, analyze and explain the relationship between design and women in the key design history works in history, and reveal the entangled form of "women" and "design history",and also revisit design history writings from the perspective of gender. The encounter between feminism and design history(a field of study closely related to human daily life)actually promotes our twoway understanding of the two.Facing the obscured part by patriarchy in orthodox design history will provide a more realistic understanding of the history of design;on the other hand, the focus on the history of design is also enriching the entire gendered research landscape.
