China is the universally acknowledged birthplace of printmaking.From the illustration on the title page of the "Diamond Sutra" in the Tang Dynasty,to the creation of woodblock overprint and "Gong Hua" technology,Chinese watermark printmaking has gradually enriched its techniques.The scope is from single-page printing and sub-plate chromatography at the beginning to the unique technique of woodblock overprint in watermark print which is developed later.In the process of plates production,the components of the print that are constantly split and reorganized according to certain rules form a unique technique of woodblock overprint that has bountiful language and great flexibility in printing.In the artist’s printing process,the individual plates are reorganized and overprinted.The finished product such as painting manual spliced each part of the printing and coupled with the composition of the text,forming a unique Chinese printmaking technique and language signs.This phenomenon is similar to the collage and reorganization in postmodern painting,and has great contemporary significance.Therefore,this paper analyzes the application of the woodblock overprint in the ancient and modern Chinese art by studying not only the splitting,separation and reorganization of the traditional woodblock overprint technique but the new significance and application of woodblock overprint as a technique and artistic thinking in the contemporary art,aiming to explore its possibility and contemporary significance.In addition,this study also targets to explore further application and thinking of the woodblock overprint technique with personal creative practice.
