The "songs of the times" was a popular song produced in Shanghai in the 1920 s and 1940 s,with lyrics based on the themes of "family and love".The culture circle of "songs of the times" thus moved south.The article takes the "5W" theory of communication as the perspective and entry point,and examines the historical changes of the southward movement of Shanghai’s "songs of the times" by combining the "CNPRR’A" music dissemination model proposed by Zeng Suijin.The historical changes in the southward movement of Shanghai’s "songs of the times" are examined.The similarities between Shanghai and Hong Kong in terms of geography,economy,demographic composition,and education made it possible for "songs of the times" to spread from Shanghai to Hong Kong with less resistance,and to move south to Hong Kong and gain a firm foothold quickly.The new media,such as record companies,radio stations,newspapers,and film industry,helped to promote "songs of the times" to be widely recognized and loved by audiences.The audience also plays an important role in the process of music dissemination,as they are both the recipients of the music works and give constant feedback to the lyricists and composers,thus giving inspiration and pressure to the creators and influencing the artistic direction and characteristics of the music.The position of the transmitters and receivers in the process of music transmission is not invariable.The Shanghai’s "songs of the times" has had a great impact on the music culture of Hong Kong after it went south.In the1980 s,Hong Kong became a window of cultural diffusion,not only transporting its own popular music into the mainland,but also opening up a channel of popular music culture between the Chinese mainland and Chinese Taiwan,Europe and America.Over the past 40 years,Shanghai’s "songs of the times" has formed a complete dissemination process from "Shanghai to Hong Kong" to "Hong Kong to Shanghai",constituting an interaction and exchange of music culture.The two open cities of Shanghai and Hong Kong have created a space for the spread of "songs of the times" to the south,which is both homogeneous and interactive.
