It has been more than one hundred years since the film was introduced into China from the West.In this hundred years,nationalization has always been the focus of the film industry.On the road of film nationalization,many film artists have contributed their own strength to this,and Xu Changlin is one of the important representatives.It covers the two aspects of Xu Changlin’s theory of film creation.Theoretically,he advocated that films should learn from traditional art forms,draw on the essence of China’s rich classical art heritage,and formed a complete set of national film creation methodology.In terms of creation,he edited and directed films that tell national stories,show national life and highlight national character.Xu Changlin’s research on film nationalization is the general trend of social,political and cultural changes.His exploration experience is the epitome of the struggle of a generation of filmmakers on the road of film nationalization.This paper is divided into four parts: the first chapter mainly expounds the era background of Xu Changlin’s film nationalization theory,and analyzes the reasons why Xu Changlin explores film nationalization from the perspective of social and political environment and theoretical development.The second chapter systematically combs Xu Changlin’s theory of film nationalization from the literature and materials such as exploring the victory and seeking treasure from traditional literature and art,montage of film and Fu,Bi and Xing of Poetry(Memoir of singing poetry and watching film),as well as other articles and interview records published by Xu Changlin.The third chapter takes the films created by Xu Changlin as the research object,and analyzes the nationalization characteristics in Xu Changlin’s films in detail from the perspectives of film dramas and film techniques.The fourth chapter summarizes the contribution and deficiency of Xu Changlin’s film nationalization exploration.
