| In the translation practice, the reporter chose China As I See It(excerpt)written by Pearl.S.Buck(1892——1973),the winner of Nobel Prize in Literature,as the original text. The book is a collection of Pearl Buck’s speeches and articles from the 1930 s to the 1970 s with 18 chapters.Pearl Buck devoted her whole life to introducing Chinese culture to the west. And the book is her representative non-fiction work on China and Chinese culture, which has important research values for both eastern and Western scholars. Therefore,it is also the most important reason why the reporter translated the book(excerpt). The reporter selected Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 of China as I See It as the original text of the translation practice. The selected Chapters, taking history as a mirror, focus on main reasons for the continuous conflicts after initial benign interaction between China and Western countries and the differences between China and the United States. The language of the original text is objective, formal and vivid. The reporter’s translation of the text aims to enable the Chinese and American people to eliminate their prejudices and misunderstandings about each other and finally realize the harmonious ideology of “all men are brothers”.After all,in the original text,Chinese and Westerners are not really as different as we thought. The translation practice mainly follows “Function plus Loyalty” translation theory. The theory is based on two cornerstones: Function and loyalty.“Function” refers to the factors that make the translation in a predetermined way in the target language environment. And “loyalty”refers to the interpersonal relationship among the translator, the author of the original text, the recipients of the translation and the initiators of the translation. The translation theory of“Function plus Loyalty” not only can help to solve the problem of the radical functionalism in translation, but also make the translation more faithful to the original text,so as to reproduce the original cultural connotations in the translation. In the translation practice, the reporter has put forward solutions to the problems encountered in the translation practice from lexical and syntactic levels, and summarized the translation processes in order to provide some reference for the similar translation practice. At the same time, the translation of historical and cultural text should follow the “intention principle”,“coherence principle” and “fidelity principle” in order to accurately convey the original meanings of the author. In the translation practice, the reporter usually uses the translation methods of “literal translation” plus “annotation” to solve the problem of culture-loaded words’ meaning vacancy. However, for some case, the reporter used the translation methods of “free translation” plus “annotation”.And for translation problems arising from logic and aesthetic differences between English and Chinese, the reporter used Chinese idioms to make the Chinese translation more literate. In the translation of long and complex sentences, the reporter used the translation methods of “reverse order”,“deduction”and “sub-translation”,as well as some translation techniques like “subsumption”,“sentence break”,“inversion”,“disassociation” and “reorganization”. |
