| In the background of “the Belt and Road Initiative”,cultural communication has become an important link between China and the West with the increasing development of international exchanges.Chinese culture is extensive and profound with a long history.Tea culture,one of the most representative Chinese cultures,flourished in Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty,developed in Ming and Qing Dynasty,and has a pivotal position nowadays.Therefore,bringing the English translation of tea culture to the world not only can develop Chinese tea culture and enhance Chinese cultural power,but also can promote the exchange and development of tea culture in the world.This translation practice report takes the fourth chapter of The General History of Tea Culture: A Magical Leaf Benefiting the World as the original translation text.This chapter introduces the history of the spread of Chinese tea to neighboring countries by land routes,which belongs to the information-based historical and cultural text.Accurate transmission of information,restoring the original author’s intention,resolving the cultural conflicts between China and the West,and paying attention to the reading experience of target readers are the requirements of this translation practice for translators.Therefore,the author uses Christian Nord’s theory of Function plus Loyalty to guide this translation practice.This paper is divided into four parts,including the description of translation task,the description of translation process,the analysis of translation cases and the summary of translation practice.The first part introduces the background and significance of the translation task,the content and characteristics of the text and the translation theory for the translation.The second part is an overview of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation revision.The third part of the case analysis is the focus of this report.The words in this text,featuring history and culture,has no corresponding vocabulary in the target language,especially in the translation of culture-loaded words such as ancient official posts,titles of ancient classical books and historical words.The author mainly adopts literal translation plus annotation,transliteration plus annotation,free translation and translation modification to embody the cultural connotation of culture-loaded words.There are classical Chinese and historical stories in sentences,which make the text authentic and objective.The author mainly adopts the methods of omission,addition,conversion and combination to make the translation conform to the reading habits of the target language readers.There is little or no formal connection between words or clauses in the text,so it takes more attention to covert coherence.The author adopts the method of additional translation to improve the fluency,logic and readability of the translation.The fourth part is the summary of translation practice,which mainly summarizes the personal experience and shortcomings in the process of translation practice.Through this translation practice,the author hopes that the readers of the translated version will have a more comprehensive understanding of China’s extensive and profound tea culture,and the translation strategies and methods of historical and cultural texts summarized by the author can provide reference for the translation of the same type of texts. |
