| English learning behavior and learned helplessness are two important factors affecting students? English learning. To be specific, four factors of English learning behavior in the present study,i.e.English learning motivation,English learning beliefs,English learning strategies and English learning attitude are all crucial factors which can influence acquisition of second language or foreign language.Learned helplessness, including cognitive helplessness, emotional helplessness, motivation helplessness and behavioral helplessness,is pervasive.Namely, learned helplessness in English can affect students? learning of other disciplines and even their future careers if it cannot be corrected or stopped in time. However, most of the researches mainly choose college students as their participants to explore English learning behavior.Besides, most of the domestic researches on students? learned helplessness are based on literature analysis, and there are few empirical researches on the relationship between senior high school students? English learning behavior, learned helplessness in English and their English proficiency. Therefore, referring to domestic and foreign research concerned, this thesis aims to answer the following questions:(1)What is the general situation of senior high school students? English learning behavior and learned helplessness?(2)What?s the relationship between English learning behavior and English proficiency for senior high school students?(3)What?s the relationship between their learned helplessness and English proficiency?(4)Are there any important predictors of English learning behavior and learned helplessness which influence English proficiency?(5)Are there any significant differences in English learning behavior and learned helplessness in terms of their demographic variables?A mixed design of empirical quantitative questionnaire survey and qualitative interview method was utilized in this study. This research took 314 high school students from Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefectures in Yunnan as samples. The quantitative data were collected through online questionnaire surveys, and face-to-face semi-structured interviews were employed to collect qualitative data.SPSS 22.0 for Window was used for the treatment of the quantitative data. This study conducted Frequency,Descriptive Statistics,Spearman Correlation Coefficient,Linear Stepwise Regression,T-test and One-Way ANOVA Analysis.Ten students were interviewed and the interview data were treated with the methods of meaning unit and content analysis. The major findings of quantitative data are presented as following:(1)The general situation of the high school students? English learning behavior is at a medium level. The general situation of the senior high school students? learned helplessness in English learning is at a low level;(2)English learning motivation and English learning strategies are significantly, positively and intermediately correlated with English proficiency of the participants.English learning beliefs are significantly, positively but weakly correlated with English proficiency. However,English learning attitude is significantly, negatively and intermediately correlated with English proficiency;(3)The senior high school students? learned helplessness is significantly, strongly but negatively correlated with English proficiency.(4)Among four English learning behavior factors,English learning motivation,English learning attitude and English learning strategies are important predictors which influence the participants?English proficiency.Among four factors of learned helplessness, emotional helplessness is the only important predictor which influences the participants? English proficiency;(5)There are significant differences in English learning behavior in terms of sex,self-rated English proficiency, the latest test scores and home location of the participants. Also, there are significant differences in learned helplessness in English learning in terms of sex,self-rated English proficiency and the latest test score. This research is conducive for both English teachers and students to understand the current situation of the high school students? English learning behavior and learned helplessness, and the relationship between senior high school students?English learning behavior and learned helplessness in English learning with their English proficiency as well.Hopefully,it can contribute to students? development and adjustment of good English learning behavior and improvement of their learned helplessness in English learning. |
