Hu Xiaoshi is a representative scholarly calligrapher spanning the late Qing Dynasty,the Republic of China and the new China,with profound attainments in both calligraphic art and calligraphy.His calligraphic research was based on philology,and he made in-depth studies of the combination of Shang,Zhou,Qin and Han scripts and calligraphy,identifying the origins of the history of calligraphy from multiple perspectives;his calligraphic works were based on the foundation stone,and he was committed to the fusion of all styles and steles,and he was able to create new styles in all seal script,clerical script,regular script and running script.Therefore,it is of profound significance to explore the development and evolution of his calligraphic art,to sort out the inheritance and construction of his calligraphic thought,and to clarify his philosophy of scholarship and innovation in the contemporary calligraphy world.This academic thesis revolves around the calligraphic art and scholarship of Hu Xiaoshi and is divided into the following five main sections.The first section focuses on Hu Xiaoshi’s multiple cultural identities and the new stage of academic convergence between East and West in which he found himself.Hu Xiaoshi’s calligraphy is inextricably linked to his roots in the tradition of stele learning and his extensive cultural roots,as well as to the twentieth-century calligraphic world,where old and new cultures alternated,where Chinese and Western ideas met,and where the art of calligraphy flourished based on tradition and innovative development.The second part examines Hu Xiaoshi’s calligraphic practice,dividing his calligraphy into four phases: acceptance,exploration,change,and maturity,analyzing his style and skills as a whole,clarifying his philosophy of learning calligraphy in accordance with the Jin Shi school of calligraphy,and examining his practice of compatibility between monument and post.The third part explores the origins of Hu Xiaoshi’s four calligraphic styles,namely seal script,clerical script,regular script and running script,and analyses his surviving works in these styles in a dynamic manner,thereby clarifying his path of mastering the ancient and innovative,compatible calligraphy,and understanding the important elements that shaped his unique calligraphic style.In the fourth section,Hu Xiaoshi’s calligraphic thought is further analysed,with the monograph A History of Chinese Calligraphy as the main focus,supplemented by his monographs,inscriptions and other materials,from the perspectives of ’distribution by state’,’division by stone’ and ’the debate on the division of clerical "The second part of the book is a discussion of Hu Xiaoshi’s unique views on the school of calligraphy and the historical perspective of calligraphy.The fifth section discusses the value and significance of Hu Xiaoshi’s calligraphy in the contemporary calligraphy scene,including his erudite conception of scholarship,which "combines the strengths of Confucianism and literature",and his innovative view of "developing the past to enlighten the future",exploring his calligraphic art and scholarship among later scholars and artists,and objectively evaluating his succession and development.It also explores the inheritance and development of his calligraphy among later scholars and artists,and objectively evaluates its academic value and significance in the history of Chinese calligraphy.
