Paying attention to students’ learning engagement is the foothold to improve the quality of education.Recently,some researchers have begun to explore students’ learning engagement in different subjects,but the study of English in junior high school is relatively less.Therefore,based on the learning engagement theory,this study aims to explore the level of junior high school students’ English learning engagement and its relationship with English achievements.This study takes the second grade students of a junior high school in Linyi as the study subjects,and uses the questionnaire and interview to explore the following two questions.(1)What is the level of junior high school students’ English learning engagement?(2)What is the correlation between the English learning engagement of junior high school students and their English achievements?By the descriptive analysis,one-way ANVOA analysis,correlation analysis and regression analysis of SPSS25.0,and the discussion of interview results,the results of the study are as follows:(1)In general,the level of junior high school students’ English learning engagement is above the average.Among the three dimensions,the level of behavioral engagement and emotional engagement are also above the average.The level of cognitive engagement is relatively the lowest.Students of different English levels have differences in English learning engagement.In general and in all dimensions,students in high score group have significant differences with students in middle and low.There are no significant differences between students in middle and low.(2)Junior high school students’ English learning engagement has a significant positive correlation with their English achievements.Its three dimensions are also correlated to English achievements.The correlation at different English levels is different.In general,English learning engagement can predict English achievements.Among the three dimensions,behavioral engagement and emotional engagement can also predict English achievements,and the former has a greater effect on English achievements.This study indicates junior high students’ English learning engagement is an important factor that affects their English achievements.English teachers in junior high school should take students’ English learning engagement seriously and try to improve it.Finally,according to the study results,this study gives some suggestions to English teaching in junior high school.For behavioral engagement,clarify English learning needs and stimulate students’ learning motivation;adjust the way of asking questions in class and encourage students to answer questions actively.For emotional engagement,modify the way of teaching and improve students’ interest in English learning;establish a correct view of English learning and enhance students’ emotional experience.For cognitive engagement,give students the opportunity to study by themselves and practice their ability of independent thinking and autonomous learning;cultivate strategic awareness and enhance the guidance for students’ learning strategy.For students of different levels,attach importance to the differences and implement the stratified teaching;adhere to the overall consciousness and promote the coordinated development of students’ behavior,emotion and cognition. |
