The plot in Chinese traditional figure painting has an inseparable relationship with its story, and is more related to its theme and function.Zhang Yanyuan once pointed out in his Records of Famous Paintings of Past Dynasties that painting has the function of "educating and helping others",and the subject matter of figure painting is mainly historical story painting with admonishing or educating function, portrait painting that publicizes the great achievements of the ruling class, elegant collection painting of literati that embodies the thought of avoiding the world, genre painting that expresses citizens’ life, and Taoist and Buddhist paintings that publicizes Buddhism and Taoism. Most of these subjects require that figure painting have the same narrative function as literature and drama,so figure painting contains more plot pictures.Starting from the source of plot in figure painting, this paper analyzes the plot in traditional Chinese figure painting. The first chapter introduces the germination of plot in figure painting in prehistoric times, the development of plot in figure painting in pre-Qin and later periods, and explores the context of plot development in figure painting.Chapter Two and Chapter Three specifically discuss the plot in figure painting from two parts: the relationship between traditional cultural background and plot, and the concrete expression of plot in painting language. In the second chapter,in the relationship between cultural background and plot,it summarizes the historical background and cultural concepts that influenced the plot development in figure painting from Qin and Han dynasties to Ming and Qing dynasties, and explores the deep origin of plot in the picture. The third chapter discusses the relationship between painting language and plot in the picture, including three parts: the expression of plot by lines in the picture, the expression of plot by colors in the picture and the expression of plot by composition in the picture, and discusses the concrete expression of plot in the picture. The fourth chapter discusses the inheritance and evolution of plot in traditional figure painting in modern times.
