Each historical period has artworks which can reflect thecharacteristics of its era. Chinese Figure Painting exists in Chinesepainting field with its unique traditional art performance practices. Itcan be described as a long history and goes back to ancient times.After many innovation and development, especially today, diversifieddevelopment of the art make it become a gorgeous flower, and stillcontinue to bloom. However, the development of arts during "CulturalRevolution" period was contrary to the overall direction. The art of the"Cultural Revolution" is born accompanied by the political movement.As a tool for political propaganda, it formed a unique style in thisperiod. The portraits of this period completely abandoned thetraditional essence of art, absorbing the techniques of Westernrealism to express the "fiery revolutionary life ". It’s just one-sidedemphasis on the role of political, too much concentrate on theexpression of the subject matter and content, and neglect it self’sform and value. Too stylized mode of creation shackles the artist’screativity and inspiration. So the art of this period in Chinese arthistory often is treated as a "forgotten history". Nevertheless, it is animportant part of Chinese portraits develop-ment history, and to beworth of further study.This article, mainly from the aspect of the times, describedChinese figure painting in "Cultural Revolution" period. Study thefigure paintings of this period deeply through its theme, features, andthe comparison of styling and composition with the traditional figurepainting. The article is divided into four chapters. Chapter1 summarized the heritage and development of the traditional figurepainting. From ancient times pottery culture to the absorption ofWestern art concepts to the founding of New China before the"Cultural Revolution", Chinese figure painting experienced prosperity,encountered the decline, and also ushered in a new spring. Chapter2mainly from the historical particularity of the "Cultural Revolution",the themes and features of the portraits of this period, and representof artists and works to illustrate the overall characteristics of the"Cultural Revolution" figure painting. Chapter3through the changesin the portraits of the "Cultural Revolution"-the recovery of the art ofthinking, performance techniques and creative forms ofdiversification, to prove the influence of the "Cultural Revolution"period portraits to the world. Chapter4compares Chinese figurepainting and traditional portraits during the "Cultural Revolution"period, intended to critique creative arts during this period with theserious consequences of blindly following to the politics.Starting from a neutral position, through the paintings of the"Cultural Revolution" and its pre-and post-study analysis, as well asthe "Cultural Revolution" period portraits and figure paintings, I hopemore understanding of this period of art objective evaluation.
