| Ecological environment provides necessary resources and conditions for our survival and development.With the development of social economy,ecological problems are increasingly prominent.Ecological research has received extensive attention from scholars.Ecological discourse analysis reveals the role of language in ecology and answers how language protects or destroys the ecological environment.As a theoretical basis,appraisal theory can reveal the ideology hidden in ecological discourse.Based on this,this study uses appraisal theory as the theoretical framework to conduct ecological discourse analysis of 50 carbon emission news in China Daily from January 2016 to December 2021.By combining quantitative and qualitative methods and using UAM Corpus Tool 3.3 to analyze attitudinal resources in the news,this study will answer the following questions:（1）How are the attitudinal resources distributed in carbon emission news?（2）How are attitudinal resources realized in the news?（3）What are the features of these attitudinal resources?Through research,we find that in terms of the distribution of attitudinal resources,attitudinal resources are largely used in China’s carbon emission news.The subcategories of the attitude system,that is,affect,judgment and appreciation resources can all be found in the news.Specifically,the most frequently used resource type is judgment,with the number of 233,accounting for 55.88%.The number of appreciation resources is 100,accounting for 23.98%.The number of affect resources is 84,accounting for 20.14%.In terms of the realizations of the attitudinal resources,affect resources used in the news can clearly express people’s and government’s attitudes towards various policies,judgment resources mainly involve the policies and measures that countries and governments will implement or are implementing for carbon emission,and appreciation resources are mainly used to describe the significance and value of various measures taken by the government to the social and ecological environment.In terms of features of attitudinal resources,positive attitudinal resources are used in news to praise or support policies or actions that are beneficial to environmental protection.And negative attitudinal resources are used to resist or criticize the behaviors or policies that are not conducive to environmental protection.The inscribed resources in the news are far more than invoked resources.The inscribed resources express the attitude of the public or the media towards policies through obvious attitude words,while invoked resources indirectly reflect attitudes through metaphor and other ways.In general,the news adheres to an objective and fair attitude to describe the situation of China’s carbon emission and the impact of carbon emission.Based on the appraisal theory,this paper conducts an ecological discourse analysis of China Daily carbon emission news.The applicability of appraisal theory as the theoretical basis of ecological discourse analysis is proved theoretically.It also provides a new research perspective for the study of carbon emission news.At the same time,through the analysis of ecological discourse in carbon emission news reports,we can make people realize the influence of media discourse on people’s ecological consciousness.The results of this study will help readers better understand the issue of carbon emission,arouse people’s ecological awareness and make people actively deal with carbon emission. |
