A Report On C-E Translation Of Chapter Five Of Forty Years Of Reform And Opening-Up:Chinese Model And Experience

From March to June 2020,the translator completed the C-E translation of Forty Years of Reform and Opening-up: China’s Model and Experience as the first and sole translator.This report reviews this translation practice project and applies Steiner’s hermeneutic motion theory to reflect on part of the translation from four perspectives:trust,aggression,incorporation,and restitution.This report also analyzes the problems encountered in the translation practice and the strategies adopted.The main body of this report consists of four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,which briefly introduces the source text of this translation practice report,as well as the purpose and significance of this translation practice.The second chapter describes the translation process,including pre-translation preparations,duringtranslation endeavor,and post-translation polishing,and introduces the theoretical grounding of this translation practice report – the hermeneutic motion theory.The third chapter is a case analysis,which analyzes fifteen examples from the perspectives of trust,aggression,incorporation,and restitution and justifies the strategies adopted by the translator.First,the translator has no choice but to trust that there is something there worth translating.Even if the source text contains typos,the translator should still try hard to deliver a reliable target text.Second,the translator needs to invade the source text to grab what the author attempts to convey.Third,the translator needs to produce a translation that conforms to the norms of the target language.Finally,the translator needs to restitute the cultural elements that are lost at the preceding stage by striking a balance between the source and target cultural contexts.The fourth chapter summarizes this translation practice project and testifies that the hermeneutic motion theory is effective in guiding and explaining translation practices.It also points out that the translator may not be aware of what specific translation theories s/he applies to solve the problems encountered in the actual translation practice,but a reflection on the translation process and result will verify the impact of the translation theories that the translator has learned on his or her translation strategies.
