This report is based on the C-E translation practice of Exploring Huashan Delicacies,which is a Chinese tourist brochure issued by the Bureau of culture,tourism,sports,radio,film and television of Ningming County,Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.It introduces food,environment and culture in Ningming County.The author of the report got the authorization to provide an English version of the brochure for international communication,namely,to facilitate Huashan delicacies and the culture to “Go Global”.The brochure features complexity in text types,including informative,expressive,and operative in introducing many delicacies and local culture.Its various writing styles of expository,literary expressions,and colloquial expressions pose challenges to the translation.And the approaches to address the difficulties and challenges make this translation practice report significant.In view of the above challenges and the explicit task goal to introduce the delicacies to the world,the Functionalist Skopos Theory is adopted as the theoretical framework to guide the translation practice.The report falls into five chapters.It briefs the background and the Skopos Theory,details the translation process and provides many examples for case studies.As the main part of the report,the fourth chapter expounds on the approaches taken to address the difficulties.Under the guidance of the three rules,namely,the skopos rule,the fidelity rule,and the coherence rule,the translator uses various translation methods such as literal translation,literal translation with notes,free translation as well as transliteration with explanation to realize the mission goal of “Telling China Stories”.In practice,literal translation and transliteration are applicable to translate food names and other words with Chinese characteristics;in bridging the gap between Chinese and English,translation skills such as conversion,amplification and explicitation are used to get closer to the target readers;a combination of techniques like restructuring,expansion and omission are employed to make adaptation to be in line with the international communication goal.All the attempts are aimed at providing a good-quality translation version to meet the job requirements,in which,the target readers’ acceptance is accommodated.The translator tries to draw some conclusions from the translation practice,in the hope that it can help improve her translating ability and provide experience for future similar translations.
