| Combining aesthetics,psychology,cognition,and other disciplines,quantifying evaluation of artworks,and understanding the relationship between visual stimulation and aesthetic experience is an important topic of empirical aesthetics.Its quantitative evaluation results are widely used in many fields such as computational aesthetics,affective computing,artificial intelligence,etc.However,at present,few empirical studies on Chinese calligraphy and painting.In the literature of theory,there are a large number of relevant records of aesthetic experience,indicating that calligraphy and painting have great empirical study value.Calligraphy and painting are the art of lines.Meanwhile,lines are the most basic graphic element and belong to the surface-level of visual stimulation.Therefore,according to the reduction method,we choose calligraphy and painting lines as the main research object.This paper carries out empirical research from the two dimensions of aesthetic experience in visual art,perception and aesthetic emotion.The main contents are as follows:1.Quantify the perception of calligraphy and painting lines.We selected 21 subjective materialized perceptual dimensions from motion,touch,sound,and taste,and designed a visual analog scale for quantitative analysis.First,the subjective differences between different calligraphy and painting lines were summarized through data description and analysis.Then,the principal component analysis of the data shows the two-dimensional principal component of the perception space.Finally,combined with the traditional theory,we analyzed the characteristics of perception space: the main axis corresponds to the style tendency of vigorous vs beautiful which has frequently been discussed in traditional literature,and the sub main axis corresponds to the style tendency of regular vs cursive.2.Quantify the aesthetic emotion of calligraphy and painting lines.From the perspectives of complementing emotions(similar to real life emotions)and responding emotions(correspond to humans’ fascination with artworks:(1)Explore the mapping relationship between calligraphy and painting lines and emotion.First,to determine whether the lines are related to daily emotions,we conducted semantic a analysis experiment:participants were required to write anthropomorphic articles for lines.After collecting articles,sentiment classification was performed.It was found that there were obvious differences in emotional tendency between different lines,indicating that there was a mapping relationship between lines and emotions.Then,in order to further explore this mapping relationship,27 emotional valence words are used to measure the emotion of calligraphy and painting lines.It was found that lines have better performance in pleasure and arousal.(2)Quantify the style of lines,and compare the influence of structure and brushwork on calligraphy style.Calligraphy style is the unique aesthetic emotion of calligraphy.Does calligraphy style come from brushwork or structure? This issue has been debated for more than a thousand years but remains unresolved.This paper quantifies the influence of structure and brushwork on style by an empirical aesthetic experiment.A total of 148 calligraphy works were selected as stimuli,including large seal script,small seal script,clerical script,regular script,semi-cursive script,and cursive script.Then,they are processed into four groups by gradually removing the structure from the original pieces.45 adjectives from traditional calligraphy theory literature were chosen as the options in the form of dichotomous scales.Participants evaluated the style of the 4 groups of stimuli from the 6 script styles respectively.The results showed that brushwork had a greater impact on the calligraphy style.The experiment also found that the 45 style words roughly span a five-dimensional style space.3.Develop a visual system of the aesthetic experience of calligraphy and painting lines.The system adopts flat design style,which comprehensively showed the distribution of lines in perception space and emotional space,as well as the calligraphy style transfer process of different script styles and structures.And provided interactive ways to help users deepen understanding of calligraphy and painting works. |
