Peruvian-Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa’s 2000 novel La fiesta del chivo has a strong ethnographic dimension,as it expresses a uniquely Latin American tradition of reality in terms of both theme and content. This thesis attempts to explore the work from the perspective of ethnographic narrative, focusing on the reasons for its formation, its presentation and its national significance, with the aim of showing that ethnographic narrative is not only limited to nationalities, but can also have universal significance. The thesis is developed in three main sections. The introductory section provides an overview of relevant domestic and international research on the work, and sets out the significance of the thesis, its thinking and methodology. The main part is further divided into three chapters.Based on the intersection of literature and anthropology, the first chapter clarifies the concept, development and current situation of ethnography and ethnographic narratives. The second chapter analyses the presentation of the work’s ethnographic narrative. The metaphorical meaning of the "goat" implies a mythological and religious metaphor and presents the deep-rooted religious beliefs of the Latin American people;Latin America has a tradition of damaging the body, and therefore physical illness and cruel torture characterise the work’s ethnographic narrative;political freedom and dictatorship often exist in opposition to each other, and the Latin American’s “Códillo” tradition of Latin America inspires the people to seek freedom.Through these three different narrative perspectives, the novel’s ethnographic narrative is presented as a whole. The third chapter sees La fiesta del chivo as the self-expression and reflection of the Latin American nation, looking at the nation from an internal perspective in order to consider the future and the way forward for the self-nation.Llosa,as the most direct participant, uses this work to present the real Latin America to the world, and in it continues the tradition of valuing, thinking about and expressing reality in Latin American literature, following in the footsteps of Marquez in exploring the paths and directions that Latin America has taken and has not taken. The conclusion is first of all a brief summary of the content of the thesis, and lists and analyses the ethnographic narrative features of some Chinese and foreign literary works, thus also showing that ethnographic narratives are sometimes not deliberate, but are generated by writers living in a certain environment, consciously or unconsciously,in order to identify themselves and their nationalities.
