| In 2020,the COVID-19 pandemic broke out around the world,resulting in an unprecedented global economic and trade recession.The power sector in Southeast Asia is no exception.The source text of this project is entitled COVID-19 and the Power Sector in Southeast Asia: Impacts and Opportunities published on the official website of the United States Agency for International Development,in which the author introduces the impacts of COVID-19 on the power sector,recovery measures and solutions to build long-term resilience in Southeast Asia.Given the foresight and enlightenment of the theme and opinions in this text,the translator hopes to provide a reference for the domestic power industry through this translation practice.The source text is informative according to Peter Newmark’s classification of text types,mainly aiming at conveying facts and contents.Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory focuses on information equivalence rather than formal correspondence and is therefore applied to guide this translation project.Level shifts(shifts between grammar and lexis)and category shifts(structure shifts,class shifts,and unit shifts)are applied in the translation process based on a comprehensive analysis of the language features of the source text,finding that the theory enables the flexible use of translation methods to solve difficult problems in translation.It is proved that the theory is highly effective for translating informative texts and can well guide translation practice. |
