In order to fit the physical and mental development of primary school students and the characteristics of English learning in the primary stage,primary school English teachers often adopt lively game based teaching to enhance the teaching effect.The choice of game types,the setting of teaching links and the awakening of expected students’ emotions all depend on teachers’ correct understanding and reasonable design and implementation of game based teaching.However,many studies show that front-line teachers have misunderstandings and misuse in correctly understanding the value of game and designing and implementing game based teaching,and there is a large room for improvement in English game based teaching in primary schools.The application of game based teaching in primary school English teaching has various forms and different teaching effects.The excellent courses at the ministerial level in Jiangsu Province can focus on the flexible application of game based teaching by primary school English teachers.This study selects 38 excellent primary school English courses of “One teacher and One course” in Jiangsu Province in 2019 for research,designs and uses the classroom observation record table to analyze the form and type,design and implementation of game based teaching in excellent courses,systematically observes and summarizes the relevant elements of game based teaching in excellent courses,supplemented by interviews with 10 front-line teachers,so as to further understand the current situation of the application of game based teaching in real English teaching.In the research process,firstly,the game based teaching in 38 excellent courses is pre analyzed,the interview outline is formulated and the preliminary classroom observation record form is drawn up,and then the front-line teachers are interviewed and consulted to continuously improve the effectiveness and practicability of the classroom observation record form.A total of 11 observation points are set in the classroom observation record form combining description and quantification,and corresponding check boxes are set after some observation points to facilitate rapid recording and quantitative research.Before observing and studying the lesson cases,analyze the teaching plans and teaching materials corresponding to the lesson cases;quantitative records and descriptive records shall be made according to the observation points during observation;After observation,sort out and analyze according to the research dimension.Through research,this paper summarizes the characteristics of excellent course game based teaching in form and type,game design,quantity and duration of game based teaching,application in different grades and teaching links,so as to provide reference for front-line teachers.However,there is still room for improvement in game based teaching in excellent courses.Including teachers,teachers rarely participate in the game based teaching process as game participants.Teachers’ understanding of game based teaching needs to be improved.It is likely to ignore students’ thinking and emotion,experience and interaction in the process of game based teaching.On this basis,some suggestions are put forward: teachers should further improve their understanding of game based teaching,create a relaxed and free teaching environment through game based teaching,enhance the diversity of game based activities in various ways,and pay attention to students’ experience and feelings in the game and process while paying attention to the goal of language teaching.
