Analysis Of China's National Image In Japanese Film

The national image,as a comprehensive concept,is composed of many elements,which can be roughly divided into two parts: the cognition of domestic people towards China’s national image and the cognition of overseas people towards China’s national image.This study mainly focuses on the latter.The national image is of great significance,which plays an important role in reflecting the legitimacy of a country,publicizing and beautifying the country and affecting the public influence.Due to long-term occupation in the international public opinion field for western countries and long-term hostile to China,and the insufficient improvement of comprehensive national strength,China’s national image is often distorted and vilified.At the backdrop of the new era,realizing the Chinese dream,achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,improving China’s image and expanding China’s power in the international community becomes even more urgent.Meanwhile,all sectors of society also pay more attention to the shaping and dissemination of China’s national image.Film and television works play a subtle and powerful role in shaping a country’s national image with the characteristics of intuitiveness,strong sense of picture and wide audience range,which are conducive to spread relevant national values and ideologies.Rose at the end of the 19 th century,the Japanese film industry,which experienced ups and downs,have gradually recovered and set sail again at the beginning of the 21 st century.Japanese films,once have been used as an important tool to publicize and beautify Japanese militarism and distort the national image of other countries,including China,are deeply loved by people at home and abroad with pure love films,horror films,animated films and series of films at present.This study attempts to take Japanese film works as the research object,sorting out the Chinese national image in the films that have won the four major film awards in Japan,and summarizing its characteristics and analyzing the reasons.This study found that the national image of China portrayed in relevant film works presents a variety of characteristics.The overall rise of China’s national strength is reflected through the changes of China’s national image shown on the Japanese screen.The scenes with ancient China and its culture in Japanese films also appear very frequently.However,the characters representing China mostly undertake the marginal task of serving the Japanese protagonist,lacking the description of the image towards modern China,and the obvious characteristics of the times are also presented in corresponding film works.This study believes that reasons for this feature are diverse.For example,the political reasons,including the the national interests considered by Japanese government,the influence of changes in strength between China and Japan,and the self-effort of the Chinese government;And the profit seeking characteristics of the market in economic factors.In addition,frequent folk exchanges and the director’s personal subjective feelings are also important factors affecting the shaping of China’s national image by the corresponding film works.
