English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 Edition,Revised in2020)clearly puts forward that the English curriculum of senior high school should aim to develop students’ English key competencies,including linguistic competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability,carrying out the fundamental task of moral education.The cultivation of English key competencies is inseparable from English teaching and English homework,as the important extension and supplement of classroom teaching,can well promote the actualization of teaching objectives.As a consequence,English homework plays an important role in English teaching.However,in teaching practice,the validity of English homework is unsatisfactory,for instance,single form,dull and repetitive content,etc.,which is not beneficial to achieve teaching objectives.As Basic English curriculum reform enters the era of key competencies,it is necessary to explore how to optimize English homework so as to promote the improvement of students’ key competencies.This research aims to address the following three questions:(1)What’s the current situation of English homework in senior high school?(2)Can English homework based on key competencies change students’ attitudes and increase students’ interest in English homework?(3)By optimizing English homework,can students’ English key competencies be improved?This research takes English teachers and students of two classes(one is as experimental class,the other is as control class)in Grade One of a senior high school in Baoji City,Shaanxi Province as research subjects.Based on the Theory of Multiple Intelligence,Zone of Proximal Development and English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School,the research adopts questionnaire survey method,interview method and experimental method to explore the optimization of senior high school English homework.And questionnaire survey method and interview method are employed to investigate the current situation of English homework in senior high school.The results show that the problems of current English homework mainly cover focusing on language knowledge,single form,etc..After analyzing these problems and causes,based on relevant literature and theories,principles and strategies of optimizing English homework design based on key competencies are put forward and English homework is designed by types.In the meanwhile,one semester’s teaching experiment is implemented to probe into whether English homework optimized can change students’ attitudes and increase students’ interest in English homework and improve students’ English key competencies.After the experiment,by analyzing the data,it can be explicitly seen that English homework optimized is conducive to changing students’ attitudes and increasing students’ interest in English homework and improving students’ English key competencies.At the same time,taking Book One and Two of PEP for example,a case of English homework is designed to provide some reference for English teachers in senior high school to effectively design English homework.As a result,students’ English key competencies can be cultivated.
