Chekhov’s five classic full-length plays Ivanov,Seagull,Uncle Vanya,The Three Sisters and Cherry Orchard have established his important position in the development history of realistic drama.Andrew Cecil Bradley(1851-1935),a British literary critic and theorist, appealed to the psychology of dramatic characters in his tragedy theory, reformed Hegel’s related tragedy theory, and showed lasting value in the process of investigating realistic dramatic works. In view of this, this paper intends to take the above five classic full-length play as the research object, and use the tragedy theory of Andrew Cecil Bradley to discuss the tragedy of love in Chekhov’s full-length play, and to understand the unique artistic spirit of Chekhov’s love tragedy. This paper consists of introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introduction part introduces the creation situation of Chekhov, sorts out the research situation of Chekhov’s five full-length plays at home and abroad, points out the lack of research depth of the love tragedy in Chekhov’s plays, and briefly introduces the significance of the topic selection and research method of this paper. The first chapter mainly analyzes the tragic display of love in Chekhov’s drama, which is divided into two parts, namely, the unrequited love relationship and the love ending of eternal separation, and points out that this abnormal love relationship and the ending of separation are caused by the characters’ personality characteristics. The second chapter mainly analyzes the tragic conflict of love in Chekhov’s drama, and discusses it from two parts: the conflict between love cognition and marriage reality, and the conflict between individual choice and social reality, pointing out the tragic fact that the inner evil of the love subject causes the conflict and causes the love to be destroyed by the real power. The third chapter mainly analyzes the creative motivation of Chekhov’s love tragedy, which is divided into three parts, namely, the writer’s uncompromising creative attitude towards the Russian cultural environment at that time, the creative restriction brought by the specific era environment at the turn of the century, and the writer’s creative emotion of attaching importance to suffering. It is pointed out that these three factors together constitute the creative motivation of Chekhov’s love tragedy. The conclusion partially reaffirms the tragic artistic characteristics of love in Chekhov’s full-length play, and points out the writer’s affirmation of the ideal value of love and the great vitality of Chekhov’s tragic world of love.
