The material of this translation practice report is excerpted from Chapter 5 of Protocol:The Power of Diplomacy and How to Make It Work for You,written by Capricia Penavic Marshall, former Chief of Protocol of the United States. This book shows the important role of protocol in international diplomacy and puts forward detailed suggestions on promoting interpersonal communication, business negotiation and international communication with protocol. The selected chapter mainly introduces how the signals such as words, tones, gestures and expressions, affect the diplomatic process and even international relations;and how to use "the language of persuasion" to effectively improve communication skills, and achieve diplomatic goals.Due to the differences in language and culture, and the particularity of political texts, there are inevitably many difficulties in the process of translation. The translator actively explores effective ways to solve various problems and strives to achieve the best translation. At the levels of language and culture, the original text uses vivid language with abundant cultural information,so the translator should attach enough importance to the differences in language and deep in culture between China and the West, and understand the author’s real intention,so as to reduce reading difficulties for target readers. The original text focuses on real diplomatic cases,so the translator should fully understand international diplomacy and protocol, and take the accuracy of terms, the fidelity and readability of translation into consideration. This translation practice report consists of four parts. The first part is the description of translation task, including the source of the selected material, the introduction of the author and the work, and the significance of the chosen material. The second part is the description of the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, difficulties in translation and post-translation review.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Nida, the translator adopts flexible translation skills to achieve the reproduction of the source text information from semantics to style. The third part is the analysis of translation cases,in which part the translator analyses and solves the key and difficult problems of translation from the four aspects of vocabulary, syntax, discourse and rhetoric. The last part is the summary of translation practice, including the translator’s experience in the translation practice. |
