A Report On The Translation Of Political Realism In International Relations From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Today,with more and more communication and cont act between countries,the degree of interaction between countries has gradually deepened,and the project of international relations has emerged and developed rapidly.In addition to the economic,cultural,military and other aspects which were involved in international relations,the study of international relations theory with strong interdisciplinary and practical prominence is increasingly favored by scholars of international relations.The international relations literature belongs to the social science text,aiming at elaborating the development trend of international relations in different historical periods or analyzing and evaluating the specific events.The themes of these texts have the consistency of the semantics and rigorous analysis with accurate and political characteristics,which have high academic value and social value.In this context,the translator chose the text of the translation project in line with his own interests.The original text of this translation practice report was excerpted from the Journal of Philosophical Compass which was published in 2017.It is also an English scholastic paper which was included in the Stanford Philosophy Encyclopedia.The paper mainly introduced the development of an important guidance international relations theory-political realism.The translation of this article has not yet appeared since its publication,so the author chose to carry a full-text translation.In order to meet the reading requirements of the target language readers,and considering the different cultural context between China and western countries,this translation practice is accomplished from the perspective of N ida’s functional equivalence theory,seeking to reproduce the source language from semantics to style in the most appropriate,natural and equivalent language,so as to reduce cultural differences and achieve equivalence between the source text and the target text.The standard of the content is intended to accurate and easy to understand,and the style of the translation version is trying to conform to Chinese readers’ reading habits.The report mainly studies the lexical level.By using different translation strategies and methods,and taking some examples to prove,the translator further explores the use of a variety of translation skills in noun translation,such as polysemy,liberal translation,omission,and conversion,in order to make the target text more readable and fluent.The translation report consists of four parts.The first part is the translation task description,which mainly includes the introduction to the source text and the report,the initiator and the purpose of the task,and the significance of the report.The second part mainly introduces the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,process of translation and post-translation management,which mainly introduces the use of functional equivalence theory and the methods adopted in the translation process.The third part is the main part of the whole paper.The translator analyses noun translation in detail using different translation method.The fourth part is the conclusion,which further explains the major findings,limitations and suggestions about the translation practice.It is hoped that this report will provide some reference value and assistance for future translation of similar subjects and relevant translation of theoretical texts.
