| Since the 1990 s,There is an upsurge of " after theory " in English and American academic circles,in which the end of theory and literature are also endless.In this context,Jonathan Culler was famous for his interpretation of Structuralist theory.Culler focused his attention on the meta-problems of literary theory,studying the issues of what is theory,what is literature,and the relationship between theory and literature.This article focuses on Culler’s thinking on theory and literature,sorting out the origin and formation of Culler’s later literary theory,exploring the evolution of his early and current theoretical viewpoints,and try to grasp the value of Culler ’s later literary theoretical thoughts.The first chapter mainly discusses the research on structuralist poetics and deconstructionist of Culler,analyzes who has an influence on the formation of Culler ’s theory,and examines the changes between Culler ’s early and later theories.The interest of Culler’s academic research began with linguistics.His fame after the publication of "Structuralist Poetics",coupled with the subsequent interpretation of deconstructivism and other theories,he became an excellent theoretical interpreter.Since the anti-theory controversy at the end of the 20 th century,it can be regarded as a new stage of his theoretical research.During this period,his works mainly focused on the relationship between theory and literature,lyric poetry theory,and so on.Poetic have always been the clues hidden in his theory.The second chapter analyzes Culler’s understanding of theory and the role of theory in literature.In his view,theory has gone beyond the realm of literature and has become a genre,a discourse with an interdisciplinary nature.Literary research is only possible in the field of theory,and theory can provide a thinking framework for literary research."Text" and "Performative" are important tools and examples for interdisciplinary research.In fact,Culler’s view elevated theory from a subsidiary status of literature to a position alongside literature,effectively explaining why there have been endless theories far away from literature since the twentieth century.Chapter Three discusses Culler’s understanding of literature and the intimacy of literature and theory.In Caller’s vision of "the literary in theory","the literary" not only includes specific literary works,but also works on a wide range of writing levels,using literary techniques and writing that produces literary effects can be called the literary.Since modern society,from exploring what literature is,to asking what literariness is,to discussing whether the literary spreads,the questioning of literature has never stopped.In Culler’s view,there are similarities between the literature and theories,like the exploratory,skeptical and so on,literature can open theoretical discussions and provide it with ideological resources.The fourth chapter explores Culler’s argument for " theory returns to literature".There is a strong link between literature and theory,theory can play a role in literary research,and literature can also play an essential role in theoretical writing and reading In Culler’s view,many philosophical works seem obscure on the surface,but the reading method is not appropriate enough.Only by looking at them from a literary perspective can they dig out their true meaning.In addition,from the construction of Anderson’s theory of nationalism,Culler found that the form of the novel played an important role in it. |
