Since the New Age,rural society has faced new challenges and transformations, and many writers have turned their attention to the countryside, creating a number of images of rural intellectual youth who struggle between the countryside and the city, between folk and official, between tradition and modernity. This article takes the image of rural intellectual youth in the novels of the new era as the object of study, defines the concept of the image of rural intellectual youth, and classifies them into two types, namely "breakout and rebellion" and "lost and trapped",according to the spiritual direction presented by their characters. They are divided into two types:’breakout and rebellion’ and ’lost and stuck’.Starting from the cultural and contemporary contexts, the article analyses the connotations of the images of rural intellectual youth in the two spiritual postures and their current situation, attempts to outline the genealogy of the images of rural intellectual youth in vernacular novels since the New Age,explains the internal and external reasons behind their portrayal, and tries to grasp the literary and practical significance of the portrayal of rural intellectual youth. The essay consists of an introduction,a body and a conclusion. The introductory part of the essay begins with an overview of the realistic connotations of the image of rural intellectual youth and the historical origins of the image of rural intellectual youth since the May Fourth Movement, which serves as the background for the selection of the topic. On the basis of a clear definition of the "image of rural intellectual youth",this paper reviews the current research results on the image of rural intellectual youth and outlines the current research status and development trend of the subject,so as to identify the shortcomings of the academic research on the spirituality of the image of rural intellectual youth in vernacular novels since the new era. This establishes the innovative point of this article, namely,to take the differentiation of the spiritual gesture of the main body of the image of rural intellectual youth as an entry point,to delve into the background of the social reality of rural China in the new period,to explore the creative gesture of writers and the artistic construction of the image, and to attempt to enter into the study of the image of peasants with a new perspective and method. The first chapter explains the connotation of the image of rural intellectual youths with a"breakout and rebellious" spiritual posture in the rural novels of the New Age,looking at their state of existence and spiritual outlook during the old and new economic, political and cultural transitions in rural society in relation to the specific context of the times, and exploring the strong sense of self-subjectivity behind them.By virtue of their intellectual and cultural abilities, they have emerged from the position of the "questioned" to become participants and leaders in the construction of rural modernisation, taking on the responsibility of carrying the cultural enlightenment of the countryside, continuing the spirit of traditional culture in the context of modern civilisation, and promoting the "rebirth" of traditional culture. They have taken up the responsibility of carrying the cultural enlightenment of the countryside, continuing the spirit of traditional culture in the context of modern civilisation and promoting the "renewal" of traditional culture. At the same time,as a new generation of rural elites, they have constantly rebelled against and confronted the long-rooted gentry, clan and divine power in the rural society, reflecting a strong spirit of intellectual reflection and criticism. The second chapter explores the spiritual dilemmas of the rural intellectual youth in the rural novels of the new era,who are in a state of "loss and distress".Compared with the abovementioned images, they are not only limited in material living conditions, but the increasingly solidified class and cultural atmosphere has also caused them to feel anxious and question their identity.Or,after being frustrated by the reality, they project their unrealized self-ideals into the construction of a "utopia",trying to complete the spiritual redemption in the age of desire. The third chapter analyses the strategies of constructing the image of rural intellectual youth in rural novels since the New Age,starting from the narrative perspective, narrative mode and plot mode, and combining them with narrative theory. With the help of the first-person restricted narrative perspective, the third-person omniscient narrative perspective and the third-person restricted narrative perspective, the writer seeks to achieve a dynamic view of his image. In order to present the character traits of the rural intellectual youth in a three-dimensional and comprehensive manner, the writer adopts the narrative mode of returning to the everyday, recreating the daily life of the rural intellectual youth and providing a broader realistic background for the portrayal of such images. In addition, the writer organises the two episodes in which they"return" from the city or "confront" the city to reveal the complex mental space of the rural intellectual youth in the midst of the urban-rural relationship.Chapter 4 explores the causes of the portrayal of rural intellectual youth in the novels of the new era from two perspectives:social changes in the countryside and the writers themselves. In the first and second sections, the external causes are analysed. The breaking of the social stagnation in the countryside and the changes in the relationship between urban and rural areas since the new period have influenced the behavioural choices of rural intellectual youth, providing a complex realistic background and narrative field for the portrayal of rural intellectual youth. The third section starts from the creative posture of writers, and takes the shift in the two creative postures of "reflection" and "care" of writers’ intervention in reality as a breakthrough to explore how the image of rural intellectual youth has moved from builders and leaders to the bottom since the new era.Chapter 5 analyses the value of the portrayal of rural intellectual youth, considering the value and significance of the portrayal from the perspective of reality and literary history. These images reflect the political, economic and cultural transformation of rural society since the New Age,revealing its hidden social problems, expanding the spectrum of images in the creation of vernacular novels, and revealing their unique cultural character and aesthetic qualities. The concluding remarks provide an overview of the unique value of the image of rural intellectual youth in rural novels since the New Age,and point out the limitations of the image of rural intellectual youth in the New Age,in an attempt to provide some valuable references for future innovation and breakthroughs in the image of rural intellectual youth.
