| The "sunrise and the moon" refers to the pair of paintings that show Arhat or monks mending their cassocks and reading scriptures,mainly created in the Song and Yuan dynasties,of which the sunrise painting is the cassock painting and the moon painting is the scripture reading painting.During the Five Dynasties period,the images of mending cassocks and reading scriptures began to appear in groups among groups of Arhat.Since the Song Dynasty,the main subject of the picture gradually shifted from Arhat to monks,and the painting style also tended to be sparse and simple,and there appeared independent mending cassocks and reading scriptures pairs of panels,of which the pairs were given the specific names of sunrise and moon,and formed a certain scale of creation.From then on,a close connection was formally established between the diagrams of mending the line and reading the scriptures,and a kind of Zen Buddhism was incorporated into them.By the Yuan Dynasty,paintings of the moon and its related themes showed a tendency to be both programmatic and diversified.This thesis focuses on the core issues of "The Picture of Sunrise and Moon" of Song and Yuan Dynasties and its related thematic paintings,mainly from the following aspects.First,it starts from the definition of related concepts and explains the cultural connotation of the sunrise mending line and reading scriptures to the moon.Secondly,the reasons for the flourishing of the paintings of the rising sun and the moon in the Song and Yuan dynasties are discussed,mainly from the perspectives of the practice of the Zen Buddhism philosophy of"the Way is in the daily use",the use of the creative method of "introducing Zen Buddhism into painting",and the flourishing of the "pair of frames" combination.The main arguments are from the practice of the Zen Buddhism philosophy of "Tao in daily use",the use of the creative method of "introducing Zen Buddhism into painting",and the flourishing of the "pair of panels" system.Once again,the overall lineage of the Song and Yuan dynasties from the emergence to the development of the painting of the sunrise against the moon is sorted out and analyzed.Then,the painting styles of the Song and Yuan dynasties’ paintings of the moon and related subjects are analyzed and condensed,focusing on the artistic characteristics of representative painters and their paintings,and advancing in layers according to the historical development.Finally,it summarizes the influence of the Song and Yuan dynasties on later generations,with emphasis on the absorption of the Ming and Qing dynasties’ Arhat statues into the patterns of The picture of Sunrise and Moon and the Japanese painters’ imitation and reference to the Chaoyang Moon painting.The aim is to give a clearer picture of the development and stylistic implications of the Song and Yuan dynasties "The Picture of Sunrise and Moon" and related subjects through an overview of their overall appearance. |
