Since the 18 th and 19 th centuries, due to the progress of industry and technology, painters have been liberated from making their own painting materials and focus on painting. The painting materials are made by professionals. The development so far has led to the lack of knowledge about painting materials, but it is important. Therefore, tracing the origin of techniques, studying traditional oil painting materials and application play an important role and significance in oil painting creation. The Baroque era created by Rubens is an important period for the transformation of oil painting materials and techniques. He has mastered the Netherland techniques. At the same time,he has learned the Venetian techniques during his study tour, and creatively combined the two perfectly, and realized the transition from tempela’s mixed oil painting technique to pure oil painting technique. He is a great painter.Color layer is very important in classical oil painting.Rubens combines indirect painting with multi-layer direct painting, which makes the painting more vivid. The retention of the bottom brush mark of the cold and warm two-color painting makes the picture relaxed and active. Some highly saturated parts adopt the traditional indirect painting method, and the figure part mostly adopts the multi-layer direct painting method, creating a "visual gray" and Pearl transparent painting effect. Therefore, the author chooses Rubens as an example to deeply study the materials he chooses and the reason and background of his choice, and learn his painting steps and techniques.
