The Philosophical Interpretation Of "Ritual" In American Sinology

The Confucian concept of rites was not recognized due to religious reasons in the early stage of its spread in American Sinology.Later,with the strength of secular forces,"Rites"began to be accepted by scholars as an ethical thought.Herbert Fingarette explained Confucius’ thought of "propriety" with language analysis philosophy,and created a precedent of constructing "propriety" with western philosophy.Herbert Fingarette "Rites" formed a form of dialogue in the west,and Sinologists such as Graham,Schwartz and Hawaiian Confucianism commented on his thought.Robert Cummings Neville also put forward the concept of "Boston Confucianism" on the basis of Xun Li.Taking the symbolic theory of pragmatism as the bridge,Robert Cummings Neville organically combines the Confucian thought of "Li" with western philosophy,and uses "Li" as the communication medium to avoid conflicts between various social strata.Robert Cummings Neville believes that Confucianism,as a "living tradition",should have creative vitality and can give solutions to the practical problems of American society.For example,in terms of citizen moral construction,ecological environment protection and the change of women’s situation,he hopes to standardize individual behavior through etiquette to strengthen the moral construction of modern citizens,Shape ecological consciousness into habitual behavior and solve problems such as discrimination against women.The transplantation of rites is not as smooth as Robert Cummings Neville envisaged.The dilemma it encountered can be carried out from two aspects:Theory and practice.In theory,whether Confucianism can grow in the rootless United States.In practice,Confucianism is not the mainstream school in the United States,and the acceptance of Confucianism by the American people is not high.Robert Cummings Neville did not put forward too effective solutions in this regard,Is one of its system defects.
