| In recent years, the status of Chinese traditional culture in the world is constantly improving.Traditional cultural classics,as an important carrier of our country’s cultural communication, play a vital role in the dissemination of culture. However, while emphasizing the dissemination of our culture,it is equally important to understand the specific communication situation in western countries and the views on it in the western academic circle. The book Finding Wisdom in East Asian Classics, edited by Wm.Theodore de Bary,is a work focusing on Chinese traditional cultural classics.Under the guidance of Toury’s translation norm theory, this report carries out the practice of English-Chinese translation with some chapters of this book as the source text, and discusses various problems encountered in the process of translation practice. This report is divided into six parts. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly introduces the background, purpose and significance of the translation task. The second chapter is the task description, which introduces the translation task, source text and target readers.Chapter three describes three aspects of translation: pre-translation,mid-translation and post-translation.Chapter four is the theoretical basis, which mainly expounds the main content of Toury’s translation norm theory and the translator’s reflections about it.Chapter five is the main content of this practice report.According to the preliminary norms, the translator chooses the work which mainly introduces the classics of traditional culture of East Asian countries.According to the initial specification, the translator determines an overall translation strategy that considers both “adequacy” and “acceptability”.According to the operational norms, the translator uses specific translation strategies such as the conversion of part of speech, changing of voices, changing of sentence order, and division of long and complex sentences. The last part summarizes the translation task.In the whole process of translation, translation norm theory guides translator to make choices at both macro and micro levels. The translation of names, places and culture-loaded words at the micro level and the selection of the source text excerpts at the macro level are both of practical importance. Finally, the translator hopes that this report will provide some reference and inspiration for the translation of academic texts. |
