Since the relocation of two Western Zhou burials,M5010 and M6043,from the Dahekou Cemetery in Yicheng,Shanxi,to the Indoor Archaeology Laboratory of Shandong University in 2014,laboratory researchers have carried out fine archaeological cleaning of the two burials and excavated abundant funerary objects, preserving more detailed original materials and graphic information. This paper takes the M5010 jade overlay from Dahekou,Yicheng,Shanxi Province,as the object of study.Guided by archaeological theories, the laboratory excavation was used to clean the M5010 jade overlay, preserving more detailed original location information. The research also focuses on the discovery and distribution areas of jade overlays from the Western Zhou to the Qin and Han dynasties and the characteristics of the evolution of jade overlay forms in different periods. On this basis, the restoration of the jade overlay M5010,the regional cultural exchange, and the overview of the jade-making industry are further discussed.First, the concepts related to jade overlays are defined, the current research status of overlays and jade overlays is summarized and analyzed, and the research methodology and innovation points of this paper are sorted out.Secondly, the paper summarizes the evolution of jade overlays from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Qin and Han Dynasties, dividing them into three periods and four types of jade overlays according to their formal characteristics. Then,we focus on the cleaning and recovery process of the M5010 jade overlay from Dahekou, recording in detail the extraction process of the M5010 jade overlay and the specific location of each jade piece, and observing the microscopic traces on some jade piece samples to interpret the jade overlay production process.Based on the original excavation information and the evolutionary characteristics of the jade overlay,we propose three options for the restoration of the M5010 jade overlay.
