Abstract/Summary:
The humorous style of modern newspapers and periodicals prevailed.The author wrote the real life with a game attitude.On the one hand,it presents the aspect of Popularity and entertainment,and provides cultural commodities for the citizens to enjoy their body and mind;on the other hand,it also establishes a marginal literary criticism mode in the observation and writing of reality,expressing social voices with a playful and scolding pen,and even guiding public opinion.the main text is enlightenment and education.These works,which combine the style of elegant and vulgar,show the diverse and complex cultural landscape of modern society.And the rich and diverse styles have provided the possibility for the modern transformation of Chinese literature.This paper is divided into six parts.The introduction part delineates the research object and scope,sorts out the transformation of the literary column of Eastern Times,and summarizes the academic research on the modern newspaper’s humorous trend and Eastern Times.In the main body,the first chapter discusses the background of the generation of humour in the newspapers and periodicals in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.Since modern times,frequent wars have provided with lots of ironic material.As a modern metropolis and the center of the newspaper publishing industry,Shanghai has given birth to the diverse entertainment needs of citizens,and the humorous trend of newspapers and periodicals has taken advantage of the trend.The shaping of humorous style stems not only from the influence of ancient humorous traditions,but also under the influence of Western trends of thought.Under the demonstration and influence of Western newspapers,the humorous style gradually took shape.As far as creators are concerned,the change of identity from the field of politics to the field of newspapers,the loss of the ideal of "scholar" and the turmoil of the society,let them put their love on word games,play tricks,relieve pain,and also provide entertainment for the public.The establishment of the modern author’s remuneration system and the relatively superior working environment of the newspaper industry provided a fundamental guarantee for their humorous writing.The second chapter mainly discusses the diversified materials and themes of the humorous poetry and prose of Eastern Times.The humorous works have various contents and a wide range of materials,and there is nothing that cannot be included in them.Whether it is the doting apocalyptic dynasty,or the reforms that have been tried and failed repeatedly since the 1898 Reform,or the urban life in Shanghai that is influenced by foreign ideological trends and intertwined with the old and the new,all provide rich material for literati’s sarcasm.The literati used humorous pen and ink for enlightenment and education,entertainment and recreation,and gave full play to the dual-purpose function of literature.The third chapter discusses the humorous mechanism and discourse expression of humorous writing.By laughing at stupid failures,Misinterpretation,category confusion and common sense paradox and other multiple mechanisms,cleverly borrowing the characteristics of language and Chinese characters,making various word games,and absorbing folk forms such as couplets and ballads,traditional poetry is transformed to Create humour.The fourth chapter discusses the rich and complex cultural forms of humorous works,showing their style of combining elegance and vulgarity,the new ideas and the old order,and the literary character and literary products formed under the combined effect of commerce and literature.The conclusion part summarizes the creation of Eastern Times’humorous poems and prose,analyzes its two aspects of entertainment and reality,and its reference significance to the exploration of the new literature of the May Fourth Movement.
