Study On Independent Diplomatic Activities Of The Joseon Dynasty (1895-1905)

From the end of the 19 th century to the beginning of the 20 th century,the capitalist powers started a frenzy to carve up the world for hegemony.Located at the northeast end of the Eurasian continent,the Joseon Peninsula became the focus of their special geopolitical status.In modern times,the Joseon Dynasty,which had been pursuing the policy of seclusion for a long time,was forced to fully establish the country in 1876 by Japanese aggression.Only 34 years later,It was annexed and completely colonized by Japan.During this period,the poor and weak Joseon Dynasty did not choose to be a slave,but continuously explored the road of national independence and territorial integrity.The signing of The Treaty of Shimonoseki between China and Japan in 1895 gave the Joseon Dynasty a crucial opportunity to pursue national independence,while the signing of the Treaty of Protection of Japan and Joseon in 1905 actually shattered the dream of the Joseon Dynasty seeking national independence.This paper takes the independent diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty from 1895 to 1905 as the research subject,starts with documents and combines them with the historical background to sort out and analyze the basic process of the independent diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty in these ten years,discusses its positive significance,analyzes the reasons for its failure and summarizes the relevant enlightenment.The text is divided into three parts: introduction,theory and conclusion.The introduction part of this paper mainly expounds the purpose and significance of the topic,the status quo of relevant research at home and abroad,the research method and the innovation of this paper.The first,second and third chapters are the main part of the thesis.The first chapter is the independent diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty from 1895 to 1897: from the "alliance with Japan to expel the Japanese" to "inviting Russia to reject the Japanese",mainly discusses the change process of the Diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty after the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki between China and Japan,and summarizes and analyzes the reasons for the change.The second chapter is the independent diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty from 1897 to 1901: "neutralization diplomacy" and independent association diplomacy,mainly discusses the background and process of the neutral diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty,as well as the related diplomatic activities of the independent Association,and summarizes and analyzes the diplomatic purpose and significance of the two.The third chapter is the independent diplomatic activities of The Joseon Dynasty from 1901 to 1905: from the wartime neutrality to the loss of independent diplomatic rights,mainly discusses the diplomatic resistance activities of the Joseon Dynasty facing the Japanese occupation by force,and the specific process of the final loss of diplomatic rights.The last part is the conclusion of the thesis,which summarizes and sublimates the whole paper.During the ten years from 1895 to 1905,The Joseon Dynasty experienced a process from a vassal state to an independent state,and then lost its diplomatic power and actually became a colony of Japan.During this period,the Joseon Dynasty constantly tried to seek national sovereignty,independence and territorial integrity through independent diplomatic activities,and the modern Joseon national independence consciousness also rose.The independent diplomatic activities of the Joseon Dynasty ended in failure due to various factors such as the invasion of foreign powers and the limitations of the feudal dynasty.However,the process of its struggle is of positive significance,and its experience and lessons are worth summarizing and discussing.At the same time,it also gives relevant enlightenment to the contemporary countries.
