The text selected for this translation practice is from the Dictionary of Classical Chinese(2nd edition),which is published by the Commercial Press. This dictionary is a necessary reference book for learning ancient Chinese and is of certain academic and practical value. This dictionary contains several parts, including entries, interpretations, examples, and origins of examples. The inclusion of entries is confined to representative ancient texts written in the orthodox written language. The text of the dictionary is all in ancient Chinese, which greatly increases the difficulty of translation.Based on Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the author uses translation methods and techniques flexibly to solve the difficult problems encountered in translation by combining the characteristics of dictionaries and the principles of dictionary translation. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the background and significance of the translation project and the structure of this report. The second part is the task description, which analyzes the source text and describes the translation process. The third part is the theoretical basis, which introduces Nida’s functional equivalence theory and the principles and methods of dictionary translation. The fourth part is a case analysis, which is the focus of this report. For the difficulties encountered in this translation practice, the author classifies the translation solutions into four categories based on her translation practice and provides typical cases.First, the translator uses the methods of providing equivalents directly and providing equivalents plus glosses to deal with the translation of entries;second, the translator uses the resources of the Termbase and adopts the methods of transliteration plus annotation and literal translation plus annotation to handle the translation of culture-loaded words;third, the translator adopts the literal translation and free translation methods to solve the translation of the origins;fourth, the translator employs the compensatory strategy, the translation techniques of amplification, omission and combination to cope with the translation of the examples. The writer expects that this translation practice will provide useful content for translation studies of bilingual dictionaries. |
