| In recent years,with the progress of society and the development of science and technology,many new ways of communication have emerged,so people have less time to socialize face to face.The ability to communicate is gradually losing,and their attention to the mental health is also decreasing.To some extent,people tend to isolate themselves,which may lead to mental illness in the long run.This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report based on chapter fifteen to seventeen of the book The Power of Strangers written by Joe Keohane.The Power of Strangers is a work that encourages people talking to strangers,which talks about what happens when people talk to strangers,why do not people talk to strangers and how to talk to strangers.It is significant for the current state of social interaction.Chapter fifteen to seventeen talk about how to talk to strangers in detail.The vocabulary of the source text tends to be easily understood,but there still exists some technical terms.In terms of syntax,the text involves a large number of long and difficult sentences.In order to make a logical cohesion and coherence,a great deal of connectives,pronouns and other cohesive words are used by the author of the book.In addition,there are also some culture-loaded words in the source text.This translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.And the report reviews the translation practice,adopts the case analysis method,selects typical examples in the book,and analyzes how to translate this work under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory from lexical,syntactic,textual and cultural level,so that the target readers and the original readers have the same reading experience.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,this report summarizes some translation strategies,translation methods as well as translation techniques that can be adopted in translating such works.At lexical level,the translator uses translation methods and techniques of free translation,conversion and literal translation with annotation according to the context in terms of words;At syntactic level,translation techniques such as division,reconstruction,amplification and conversion are used to make the translation more smoothly;At textual level,the translator analyzes the cohesion and coherence of the text to ensure that the translated text is logically clear and conforms to Chinese expression habits.When the culture is taken into consideration,the explanation and amplification under the guidance of domestication are mainly be adopted to achieve dynamic equivalence between the target text and the original text. |
