| The English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2017 Edition,revised in 2020)takes the development of students’ key competency as the fundamental concept of curriculum design.This puts forward a challenging task for English teachers,namely,to develop students’ subject key competency based on subject teaching.The cultivation of subject key competency,which means preventing the superficial learning of subject knowledge and the superficial thinking of students,can be achieved through Deep Learning,one of the most indispensable ways to develop students’ key competency.Thus,it is necessary to innovate teaching methods for the purpose of promoting deep learning in senior high school so as to meet the learning demands of the new age.Reading Circles,which emerged in the United States in the 1980 s,is a form of literary reading.In essence,it is a temporary discussion group of students choosing the same reading materials.After reading individually,students play different roles in the group and discuss the contents of their task lists.This process,which is based on student’s own understanding of reading materials,changes the traditional pattern of reading that focused on language learning and teachers’ explanation.Students can connect the reading materials with real life through task lists and group discussion and express personal ideas by using the target language.Reading Circles,which aims at promoting learning progress,can not only help students internalize what they have learned but also inspire critical thinking among discussion groups.Thus,the purpose of this study is to explore the impact of Reading Circles on senior high school students’ in-depth English learning.Two parallel classes in a senior middle school in Zoucheng City were selected as the research object.Research data was collected by using reading comprehension quizzes,questionnaires and an interview.This study aims to explore the following two questions:(1)What influence does Reading Circles have on the English Deep Learning process of senior high school students?(2)What impact does Reading Circles have on the English Deep Learning results of senior high school students?Through quantitative and qualitative study and analysis of the collected data,it is found that Reading Circles have a positive effect on senior high school students’ English Deep Learning.This effect is reflected in such two aspects as Class Engagement and Learning Approaches.In terms of Class Engagement,Reading Circles can significantly improve students’ Cognitive Engagement,Emotional Engagement and Behavioral Engagement.In terms of Learning Approaches,Reading Circles have a significant effect on promoting students to adopt Deep Learning Approach,but Reading Circles show no obvious effect on reducing the use of Surface Learning Approach.The influence on Deep Learning results is reflected in academic performance and emotional experience.Specifically,Reading Circles can improve students’ academic performance and meanwhile students show a positive emotional attitude to Reading Circles.The results of this study confirm that Reading Circles play a positive role in English Deep Learning of senior high school students.By using it in senior high school,the superficial and non-participation status of English reading classes can be greatly changed and the English Deep Learning ability of senior high school students can be improved.At the same time,the findings can provide a practical foundation for further research in this field. |
