A Report On The E-C Translation Of Global Urban Agriculture:Convergence Of Theory And Practice Between North And South(Chapters One-Two)

This graduation thesis is an English-Chinese translation report,with the source text(chapter one and chapter two)extracted from Global Urban Agriculture:Convergence of Theory and Practice between North and South co-authored and compiled by Antoinette M.G.A.WinklerPrins,a geographer and professor in Johns Hopkins University.In this collection of 20 articles on the development of urban agriculture in some developed and developing countries,she aims at bridging the long-standing divide between the discussion of urban agriculture in developed and developing countries and demonstrates that today there are greater areas of overlap than there are differences both theoretically and substantively,and that research in either area can help inform that in the other.In light of features of the source text,the translator chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation as the theoretical basis in this translation practice.To clarify meanings of words,the translator mainly uses combination,literal translation plus annotation,free translation,specification and abstraction to deal with terminologies,culture-loaded words and polysemous words,trying to produce an effect on the target readers as close as possible to that on the original readers.In terms of sentences,the translator mainly adopts conversion,splitting and restructuring to render passive sentences,attributive clauses and complex sentences,so as to make the target text smoother,clearer and more consistent with the habitual expression of the target readers.To achieve cohesion in the discourse,the translator adopts reference,conjunctions and repetition methods to deal with the relations among the target sentences,which is conducive to the smoothness and coherence of the target text.In addition,the translator resorts to other helpful methods,such as using dictionaries,referring to machine translation,consulting the students majoring in horticulture and so on to improve the quality of the translation.Through this translation project,the translator hopes to improve his professional skills under the guidance of the translation theories and techniques he has learned in the post graduate stage.Above all,as a foreign language student of an agricultural university,the translator hopes this translation project can make a modest contribution to agricultural research.
