Zhang Shusheng,whose another name is Jinjian,also known by the name of Zhenxuan.He was born in Hefei,Anhui province.He was born in the fourth year of Daoguang(1824)on June twelfth and died on the eighth of September in the tenth year of Guangxu(1884).In the twenty-third year of Daoguang(1843),he entered the county school.Next year,he became a first-class student.In the third year of Xianfeng(1853),he transacted tuanlian militias in the hometown.And he fought in Anhui,Jiangsu,Zhejiang and other places.In the first year of Tongzhi(1862),in order to form the Huai-Army,he recruited three battalions.Thereafter,he followed Li Hongzhang to Shanghai to fight.In the second year of Tongzhi(1863),he was given a conferref title of Zhuoyong.Next year(1864),he led six battalions stationed in Zhenjiang.In the fourth year of Tongzhi(1865),he was appointed to manage temporarily Xuhaidao.In the same year,he was promoted to the surveillance commissioners in Zhili province.In the eighth year of Tongzhi(1869),he served temporarily the financial commissioners in Zhili province.In the same year,he was transferred to the surveillance commissioner Shanxi Province.In the tenth year of Tongzhi(1871),he was promoted to be the Canal governor-general.In the eleventh year of Tongzhi(1872),he temporarily served as the governor of Jiangsu,the Liangjiang governor-general and the minister of commerce.In the twelfth year of Tongzhi(1873),he was officially appointed as the governor of Jiangsu.In the thirteenth year of Tongzhi(1874),he was in mourning for the mother.In the fifth year of Guangxu(1879),he was appointed as the governor of Guangxi,the governor of Guizhou and the Liangguang governor-general.In the eighth year of Guangxu(1882),he acted as the Zhili governor-general.It was the time of the Korea’s “Renwu Mutiny”,Japan took the opportunity to invade Korea,he deployed the governor Ding Ruchang,Wu Changqing led troops to Korea,forcing Japan to sign a retreat.In the same year,he was awarded the rank of Crown Prince Major for his merits.In the tenth year of Guangxu(1884),France invaded Vietnam,so he sent troops to garrison the provinces of Shanxi and Lang Son in Vietnam.Later,because of the defeat of Beining,he asked himself to be dismissed from his post,and focused on the military.In that year,he died in Huangpu,Guangdong Province.His writings include the following,such as The manuscript of Zhang Jingda(Shusheng),The note of Zhang Jingda.Zhang Shusheng was an important general of the Huai Army in the late Qing Dynasty,and he was second only to Li Hongzhang in the Huai Army.Throughout his life,he was in the midst of the "unprecedented changes" in the late Qing Dynasty,promoting the establishment,development and growth of the Huai Army,from the suppression of the Taiping Army and the Twists to the suppression of the Imjin Incident and resistance to French aggression,from his first official career to the governance of the two provinces,acting as governor,played an inescapable role in maintaining the rule of the Qing court and promoting the development of socio-political,economic,cultural and educational aspects of the late Qing Dynasty.This article draws on the following materials,including Information from the first historical archives of China,Information from the Taipei Palace Museum Official history books of the Qing Dynasty and the local record.Based on the above materials,I summarized Zhang Shusheng’s official life experiences,friendships and literary activities in order to show his life.
