The Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji is an anthology of poems by monks of the Tang Dynasty, compiled by Li Gong,a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. This collection is the only surviving collection of Song people’s selection of Tang dynasty monk poems, and it is an important medium for bridging the poetry of the late Tang Dynasty and the poetics of the Southern Song Dynasty. This paper takes Li Gong and the photocopied of the Southern Song Dynasty book Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji as the research objects, examines the life of its editor, the sources of the selected poems and their mis-collection.It also discusses the editorial characteristics, editorial ideas and value influence of this collection of poems.Firstly, chapters 1 and 2 examine Li Gong’s life and writings, the sources and misrepresentation of the selected poems of the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji by retrieving relevant materials. It focuses on Li Gong’s place of origin, the scope of his travels, his self-composed poems, and the source of selected poems in the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji.Li Gong’s ancestral home was Heze, and later moved to Wucheng. He made friends with Jianghu poets and monk poets, mainly traveled in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. He was very fond of Tang poetry, and 222 of his poems have been handed down. When compiling the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji,Li Gong mainly referred to the poetry collections of Jiao Ran,Qing Sai,Guan Xiu,and Qi Ji,as well as the Tang Shi Ji Shi and the Wan Shou Tang Ren Jue Ju.He may also have referred to the poetry collections of Ling Yi and six others, and the Zhong Miao Ji and Wen Yuan Ying Hua.Because of the erroneous inclusion of 12 poems by Jiao Ran,Ling Yi and others, the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji actually includes 48 poet monks of the Tang Dynasty and 488 monk poems of the Tang Dynasty.Secondly, chapters 3 and 4 take the background of poetics in the Southern Song Dynasty as the starting point to analyze the editorial characteristics and editorial ideas of the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji.The collection of poems mainly selects the works of some famous and talented poet monks, who lived in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. The poetic style of the monk’s poetry of the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji has the characteristics of fresh and natural, majestic and peculiar, deliberate, and straightaway. The Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji reflects Li Gong’s ideas of rebelling against the Neo-Confucianism,creating a model for writing poetry, and reconciling the contradictions between Confucianism and Dhyana’s thought. Finally, chapter 5 examines the documentary value and literary influence of the Tang Seng Hong Xiu Ji.The collection of poems not only has the documentary value of preserving monk poems and poem monks, but also has the value of proofreading monk poems. In addition,it also influenced the form of monk poetry anthologies such as the Ming Seng Hong Xiu Ji,and also influenced the perception of monk poems in the Tang Dynasty by later poets.
