Abstract/Summary:
Prokofiev is one of the greatest musicians of the 20 th century and his nine piano sonatas have become synonymous with his most iconic works. The Piano Sonata No.2 in d minor is a product of the early stages of the composer’s professional career, and an important period of stylistic change. It is a return to the classical style and a departure from the Romantic style,a combination of the classical and the innovative that characterised Prokofiev’s life.At the same time,he used the percussive properties of the piano to create a unique "percussion technique".This essay begins with the biographical and compositional characteristics of Prokofiev, summarising one of his key compositional features, which is-a blend of the classical and the innovative;it also introduces the aesthetic criteria and the context in which the Piano Sonata No.2 in D minor was composed,a bold product of a period of social upheaval;in terms of aesthetics Although Prokofiev was in a turbulent period at the turn of two centuries,he insisted on being himself and not falling in with his bourgeois decadent contemporaries, creating a musical language that was very positive and lucid. This is followed by an ontological analysis of the Piano Sonata No.2 in D minor, focusing on two characteristic functional harmonies in terms of harmony, namely the use of augmented sixth-variant chords and triple whole-tone relationships;in terms of form, focusing on the stylistic features and musical effects of the fourth movement;and in terms of melody, focusing on the multi-layered melodic structure and the large interval leap melodies. Finally, the fourth movement of the Piano Sonata No.2 in D minor is analysed in terms of rhythmic metre and accent, touch and timbre, and the dynamics of the pedal, which are also representative features of modern piano music.Through this analysis, the aim is to better express the unique characteristics of Prokofiev’s art in the performance of this work.
