Sun Jiagan’s Nan Hua Tong is a very important book among the commentary works on Zhuangzi in the Qing Dynasty. This paper intends to make a systematic and comprehensive study of Sun Jiagan’s Nan Hua Tong with his Nan Hua Tong as the research object. In the introduction,a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on Nan Hua Tong is given, and the expected goals of this study are briefly introduced.Chapter 1,Sun Jiagan’s life and writing.First of all,Sun Jiagan studied under Zhu Shi,Zhang Bo Xing and other famous Neo-Confucian scholars, and his main academic thought is the Neo-Confucian theory, especially the thought of the Five masters of the Northern Song Dynasty and Zhu Xi as the main body. Therefore,Sun often annotated Zhuangzi with the Neo-Confucian theory and judged Zhuangzi’s thought from the standpoint of Confucianism.Secondly,Sun Jiagan had close ties with the Qing dynasty imperial civil examinations. He was a long-time school official in charge of education, lecturing to fellow scholars and noblemen’s sons and daughters on the study of the "eight-legged" essay, and serving as an examiner for imperial civil examinations at various levels for many times. This led Sun Jiagan to comment on Zhuangzi’s essays with the influence of the "eight-legged" essay. Finally, the style of commentary in Nan Hua Tong is relatively perfect, with a rich and varied form of double-line small-character commentary;the single-line large-character commentary has a distinct purpose and direction, focusing on revealing the structure of Zhuangzi’s essays. The purpose of Nan Hua Tong is to use the commentary on Zhuangzi to clarify the concept of "Tong" in essayology, which is why he named the book Nan Hua Tong.Chapter 2,Sun Jiagan comments on Zhuangzi with the method of the "eight-legged" essay.First of all,Sun comments on the article method of Zhuangzi with the method of the "eight-legged" essay: According to Sun,the beginning of Zhuangzi’s text mostly uses the "method of breaking the title" of the "eight-legged" essay, which highly summarizes the central idea of the whole text in one or two concise sentences;commenting on Zhuangzi’s essays with the "method of dividing legs",he believes that Zhuangzi’s essays have not violated the taboo of the "palm of the hand".Secondly,Sun uses the method of the "eight-legged" essay to explore the Zhuangzi’s textual lineage. After his combing and analysis, each of the seven articles in Zhuangzi is an article that is inherited from the front to back, the order is from the beginning, the end is echoed, the coming and going is fixed, the forward-looking and the backward-looking,and the rule is rigorous. This is Sun’s so-called "one article is like a chapter" view. Finally,Sun’s commentary on Zhuangzi is based on the method of the "eight-legged" essay and his view that "a book is like a piece,a piece is like a chapter, and a piece is like a sentence" is rooted in his concept of "Tong" in essayology. This gives his commentary a strong literary theory, which is very unique in the history of ancient Chinese literary commentary.Chapter 3,Sun Jiagan’s view of the theory of Zhuangzi in Nanhua Tong.First of all,Sun understands the structure of Zhuangzi’s seven essays as a whole from the perspective of essayology, and looks at the relationship between the seven essays from the perspective of the "eight-legged" essay, proposing that "one book is like one essay," "one book is like one chapter," and "one book is like one sentence".The idea bridges the gap between the techniques of the essay and the theory of Zhuangzi.Secondly, from the standpoint of Confucianism,Sun Jiagan,in comparison with Confucianism,Taoism, and Buddhism, gives Zhuangzi a position in the history of Chinese thought : Zhuangzi does not belong to Confucian, but the ancestor of Taoism and Buddhism. The concluding section summarizes the main points of this paper, discusses the status of Nan Hua Tong in the history of Zhuang Studies from a macro perspective, reflects on the shortcomings of the paper, and looks forward to the future research direction. |
