Research On The Image Of Washington During The Republic Of China

The construction path of Washington’s image in the Republic of China not only followed the conventional way that western characters were introduced,translated and applied in China,that is,the construction of Western characters was mainly mentioned by the introduction of political geography knowledge of western countries,and then with the integration and even collision of Chinese and Western cultures,The Western characters with greater "use value" are translated in different degrees and in different aspects,but it is obviously different from this way.The image of Washington in the Late Qing Dynasty was mainly presented in political aspects.In addition to the unique political public opinion environment and the debate on the trend of national system in China before the Revolution of 1911,the Chinese people have more concentrated on Washington’s image of "founding father",the positioning of "foreign Yao and Shun" and the introduction of the federal republic system of government in the United States.The image of Washington has been closely connected with the democratic system and political situation,which cannot be decoued.The political attribute of Washington’s image has evolved into a fixed "single feature" of its image at that time.Especially after decades of communication by the intellectual circle,the image of Washington in the Late Qing Dynasty had been single formed and almost deified,becoming a symbol and pronoun of democracy.The image of Washington still has strong "vitality" after the high intensity of use in the Late Qing Dynasty.In the Republic of China,on the basis of more in-depth "politicization" and "secularization" of the image of Washington,and through the almost continuous commemoration of Washington’s birthday and the establishment of Cultural association of China and the United States,The "ritualized" and "symbolized" in-depth construction and application of the image of Washington in the Republic of China made the image of Washington break away from the "gradually diminishing" repetition of his life story and out of the "story rut" that has been narrated for more than a hundred years.The way and path of Washington’s image construction and improvement were extended,and the interpretation level of his image was extended to a deeper level and the application scope expanded to a wider range.It has produced political and social values far beyond its own,and has become one of the very unique existence among the huge group of western character image construction and dissemination in modern China.The construction,dissemination and improvement of the image of Washington in the Republic of China were carried out on the basis of the image of Washington in the Late Qing Dynasty.The research mainly focuses on four specific aspects,namely,the democratic political borrowing of the image of Washington in the Republic of China,the way of public cognition of the image of Washington,the birthday commemoration of Washington in the Republic of China,and the establishment of the Cultural association of China and the United States.Based on the historical materials such as periodicals,magazines,books,publications,newspapers and portraits of relevant figures during the Republic of China,and by referring to the theories and methods of relevant academic research results,this paper continued the image of Washington in the Late Qing Dynasty and continued to extend the image of Washington in the Republic of China.By combining theory and demonstration,and combining the research methods of modern Chinese political history,social and cultural history and image history,the paper makes a case study on the politicization and socialization of Washington’s image extended during the Republic of China period and makes a specific analysis with the style of "anatomy sparrow".This paper makes a detailed analysis of the "ritualized" commemoration of Washington’s birthday and the "symbolized" image of Washington and the establishment of Cultural association of China and the United States during the Republic of China,and then presents the interweaving characteristics of "common introduction" and "lasting individuality" contained in the translation,construction,application and dissemination of the image of Washington in modern China.It completes the transmission,construction and application chain of the image of Washington from its introduction into modern China to the fall of the Republic of China.It also provides a new case study supplement and investigation path reference for the study of the construction,communication process,role and influence of Western figures in China.It is expected to be helpful to the in-depth analysis of the construction and dissemination of western character images in modern China.
