A Report On English-Chinese Mock Consecutive Interpreting Of Lee Hsien Loong’s Interview At The Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2021

The fourth annual Bloomberg New Economy Forum was convened on November 16-19,2021 in Singapore.It focused on advancing world’s greatest economic opportunities amidst Covid-19 recovery,from East to West and across the developing world.The source text of the moderated dialogue with Lee Hsien Loong was chosen by the author for use in the mock practice of English to Chinese interpreting.This report is an analysis and reflection of the author’s practice with Gile’s Effort Model as the theoretical basis.In the process of English-Chinese consecutive interpretation,many challenges are encountered by the the author,such as difficulty in comprehending the source text,low efficiency of taking notes,bad short-term memory,difficulty in identifying notes,and improper expression in the target language,which leads to deviation from the source text.The errors most frequently found out are misinterpretation and information loss.Such errors will directly affect the accuracy and integrity of interpretation,lead to compromised quality of overall interpretation,and even fail to achieve the purpose of interpretation,resulting in the failure of the task.The fundamental reason behind it is that the rational distribution of energy has not been realized.With the help of Gile’s Effort Model,the author systematically analyzes the difficulties in listening and analysis,note-taking and short-term memory,and speech production,that is,the causes of misinterpretation and information loss,and puts forward coping strategies from these aspects,such as deduction,omission,using succinct words and applying prefabricated chunks,etc.,to help interpreters optimize their effort allocation and reduce the cognitive load at different stages,so as to achieve better interpretation performance.The purpose of this report is to analyze the author’s interpreting practice and sum up experiences from it,aiming to not only improve the author’s own interpretation skills and professionalism,but also serve as a reference for other interpreting practices in the future in dealing with similar problems of misinterpretation and information loss.
