In modern times, the bad consequences of the Closed-door policy became apparent, and the Qing Empire generally lagged behind the Western Powers in political, economic and military aspects. In order to enhance national capabilities, the Qing court started the Westernization movement and learning from the West became a national issue.During this period, modern"science"gradually entered the view of Chinese people,it was originally called"Gezhixue"(取音译,而非Physics),which means"Learning the material to achieve knowledge",So It was quite Confucian. After a long time of understanding, the heterogeneity of modern"science"became apparent, and Chinese scholars gradually understood that it had its own norms of academic and the requirements of spiritual. It was narrow to consider the absorption and integration of"the studies of Western"in the study of"science",which was beyond the debate between the studies of two types, and it was not simply a matter of cultural compatibility.Learning"science",Chinese should pay more attention to scientific methodology, scientific spirit, scientific thought, which was an academic subject from traditional to modern, involving the progression of civilization.Du Yaquan was deeply immersed in this academic subject.Born in 1873,he studied hard and immersed himself in imperial examination at home for many years. Before the age of 22,Du Yaquan was insulated from science and did not know what science was. However, the defeat of China in the First Sino-Japanese War changed everything.Chinese lost its territory and suffered a crisis of national humiliation, while some classmates of Du Yaquan were indifferent and immersed in imperial examinations just like before.Du was very resentful and decided to make a change, first,he learned "Gezhixue",then science,so,he became a pioneer in the field of science. At that time,it was difficult for high quality scientific translations to be obtained. It would have been very difficult to go to cognitive science systematically.it was so difficult to construct relatively systematic scientific thought. The successful academic transformation of Du Yaquan reflects the huge progress in China’s academic system, which was leaping beyond the binary perspective of the confrontation between confucianism and the Western studies, and entering the transformation from tradition to modernity.During this period,"Gezhixue" had been transformed into "science",it had gradually become an academic peak in China.Du Yaquan aware science comprehensively and deeply, just like we are now,we all pay attention to its connotations. All of this was related to his continuous learning of scientific methodology and pursuit of scientific spirit. He spread scientific knowledge in print, his knowing and acting were in unity, anf His practice was consistently persistent. He also expounded his scientific thought in magazines, that were constantly exploring and expressing ideas.Du Yaquan is not a shallow " Talk about science ",but a scientific pioneer who integrates knowledge, practice, and thinking.Looking back at the past,Du Yaquan’s thoughts on science were relatively rough and have many concerns on the macro scale. That may have controversy, and it is reasonable to question whether they can be considered "scientific thought ".However,it is important not to underestimate the pioneers’ thought Level. To some extent,it is similar to the "ceiling" of Chinese science at that time,It reflected the real level of Chinese elite’ scientific thought.Analyzing Du Yaquan’s scientific thought,we can see the awakening of "human" rationality and the far-reaching thinking of cultural transformation, which is quite humanistic.Du Yaquan’s scientific career spanned the Qing dynasties.and the Republic Of China,He devoted his career to science, and committed to sustainable development of science. His deeds reflect a fact, that Chinese science had developed so hard in the early20 th century.
