A Report On C-E Translation Of An Illustrated Introduction To Qi Culture (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation

Cultural soft power is becoming an increasingly important part of comprehensive national strength.Therefore,China is vigorously promoting the establishment of a culturally strong country.In this context,the translation of traditional Chinese culture is drawing more and more attention.Qi culture,a regional culture,is a treasure and an important part of traditional Chinese culture.An Illustrated Introduction to Qi Culture is a popular social science work written by Xuan Zhaoqi,which mainly introduces the development and spiritual connotation of the Qi culture.This book is not only scientific and informative but also easy to understand and accept.Translating it into English can help foreign readers have a comprehensive understanding of Qi culture and inspire their appreciation for this excellent Chinese culture.Chapter Five is the source text of this translation.According to the text typology proposed by Peter Newmark,the translator categorizes this book as an informative text and then adopts communicative translation to guide this translation practice.The focus of the present translation task lies in the accuracy of the information and readers’ response,which aims to enable the target language readers to have a similar reading effect as the source language readers.In analyzing the linguistic features of the source text,the translator finds that culture-loaded words,classical Chinese,and serial sentences,are frequently used in the source text.However,the culture-loaded words and classical Chinese contain rich cultural connotations.Serial sentences,as one of the unique sentence patterns in Chinese,are different from English sentences in structure and ways of expression.These problems have become the key and difficult points in the translation process.The translator solved these problems by in-depth analysis of the cultural and linguistic differences between Chinese and English and consulting related materials,and meanwhile,discussed the translation methods and techniques of culture-loaded words,classical Chinese,and serial sentences.As China’s international status and influence promotes,more excellent Chinese culture will be introduced to the world.The translator hopes that this translation report can provide some reference and help for the translation of other traditional cultural texts and popular social science writings.
