English is mostly chosen as the medium for translation and explanation in the current international Chinese textbooks.The phenomena of “multiple words in the same translation”,in which the same English translation corresponds to two or more Chinese words,may cause mistakes in foreign students because of the complicated semantic relationship between the lexical systems of Chinese and English.This thesis performs complete and exhaustive statistics on the new words in the entire set of Boya Chinese textbooks that are also translated into English.After determining the number of cotranslation words,the thesis selects and categorizes the co-translation words according to the standard.Foreign students were also given questionnaires at the same time,and the reasons behind their misuse of the co-translation words were examined using the amassed corpus of foreign students.The goal of this research is to improve how co-translation words are translated in textbooks and to offer useful teaching methodologies and doable recommendations for co-translation word instruction.The whole thesis is divided into five parts.This part first expounds the significance of the topic and the object of the research,then provides an overview of the current research situation in three areas: vocabulary bias in the learning of Chinese as a second language,new word annotation in international Chinese textbooks,and the phenomenon of multiple words and one translation in international Chinese textbooks.Finally,the research methodology of this thesis is presented.The second part is introduction of co-translation words.In this part,the new words in Boya Chinese are statistically analyzed and screened according to relevant standards,and the co-translation words needed for the research are obtained.After that,the vertical comparison of the rate of co-translation words is made in different volumes,and then the horizontal comparison of it is made from the parts of speech.On this basis,this thesis meticulously classifies and analyzes the obtained data in three aspects: syllabic,semantic and pragmatic.The third part is about the types of bias and causes of the use of co-translation words by foreign students.Based on the results of the questionnaire distributed to foreign students,the co-translation words do cause bias among foreign students.And on this basis,this thesis selected some of the foreign students’ corpus to analyze the bias and investigate the reasons behind it from both subjective and objective perspectives.The fourth part is the improvement strategies for the problem of co-translation words.This section proposes feasible suggestions on the following three aspects to address the bias caused by the same translation words.In the preparation of teaching materials,the meaning of words can be limited by using the annotation method or increasing the comparison exercises of co-translation words as appropriate.In classroom teaching,teachers can use the methods of contextualizing the meaning of words,combining collocation to understand the relationship and contrastive teaching.In student learning,the internalization of knowledge can be promoted through multiple consolidation reviews and setting up a Chinese environment.The fifth part is the summary.This part gives a brief overview and summary of the research,and also points out some shortcomings of the research that still exist. |
