A Report On The E-C Translation Practice Of Energy Humanities:Current State And Future Directions(Chapter 2)

Energy humanities refers to the representation of the literary,artistic,cultural or other philosophical forms of writing focusing on energy.It is an interdisciplinary research field that studies human activities related to energy production,consumption,distribution,governance from the perspective and methodology of humanism.For society,it is important to improve human energy consciousness,realize the value of energy culture,and promote sustainable development in the future.At present,energy humanities is at the initial stage of development all over the world,but it has become a hot topic as its influence has increased greatly.The report is based on translation practice of Energy Humanities: Current Status and Directions published by Springer Press in 2021.This book is a series of academic papers on energy humanities,which was edited by Prof.Matú(?) Mi(?)ík of Comenius University,and Prof.Nada Kujund(?)i(?) of Turku University.Based on the fact that energy humanities is an important field in the contemporary humanities,the book discusses the critical role of energy for human beings to organize their society,culture,and politics.The report selects the second chapter of this book for translation,analyzes and summarizes the linguistics features and translation strategies of academic texts in social sciences,which is an in-depth discussion on the translation of academic texts.As academic works in social sciences,the book is a typical informative text.The obvious academically linguistic features of the book reflect the strict expressive logic and professional research attitudes of the author,thus posing difficulties for the translation practice.The report classifies the linguistic features of the source text into three categories:1)abundant use of professional vocabulary and terminology,such as “energy humanities”,“Northern Gateway [Canada] pipeline” and “energy transition”;2)complex sentence structures that involve lengthy and passive constructions;3)rigorous logic,clear organizational structure,and precise language expression.Under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory,the report summarizes the translation skills of words,sentences and discourse in translation practice,that is,lexical choice,part-of-speech conversion,information supplement of terminology translation,splitting and restructuring of long and difficult sentences,transformation of passive voice into active voice,addition and omission,cohesion and coherence in discourse.Through the translation practice,the translator hopes to bring a profound discussion on the translation of academic texts,and also provides a reference for translators to deal with similar texts.
