A Report On The Translation Of Quantitative Methods In The Humanities:An Introduction (Chapter Two)

Quantitative Methods in the Humanities: An Introduction,is co-written by Claire Lemercier and Claire Zalc,in which application of quantitative methods in the humanities,especially history,is introduced.There are seven chapters in total and this report is based on the E-C translation of Chapter Two “Sources and Samples”.In this Chapter,how to collect suitable sources for certain research purpose,how to use proper sampling and testing data are given.According to Text Typology,the source text(ST)is an informative one which conveys knowledge of quantitative methods.In the ST,passive voice and postpositive attributes are largely used.As Chinese and English differ in grammatical structure and language habits,translation should fit expressions of the target language or consider its readers.With the help of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator endeavours to make the original content fully transmitted in the target text(TT),as well as to make the TT conform to Chinese expression habits by applying translation skills,including retention of passive voice,conversion of passive voice into active voice,prepositioning,combination,division and shifting.
